I DID IT FINALLY nix run github:NixOS/nixpkgs/nixos-24.11\#rustdesk-flutter
@jerry Given you're an infosec specialist & i'm not, i fear my reply will be far too low-tech & off-topic for your intentions in this poll. So, fwiw...
Kann mir ein Wesen hier gerade akut mit #Photoshop helfen?
Habe einen #Rustdesk Server zwecks RemoteDesktop...
Also alles ganz datensparsam...
Habe da mal vor Jahren etwas gemacht und muss jetzt was dran ändern...
I'm still a bit bummed that #RustDesk doesn't support DNS SRV records. Having to manually share your key sucks.
Been using #teamviewer for years now, but now with the free license I cannot log into my parents' laptops for IT support anymore, so now it's time to switch to #rustdesk for remote desktop connections!
Had a three hour remote family admin session last night, including dirty flashing two e/OS/ phones.
Everything worked like a charm. Big thanks to #rustdesk!
I want to like #RustDesk, but the grey circle area around the mouse on iPad with a keyboard is a massive dealbreaker.
I yanked #Manjaro off of my mother's laptop and replaced it with a nicely customized
#NixOS.
She now has a button to pull config updates from my #homelab and build it (also done regularly in the background). Old versions stay selectable at boot.
When she has a problem, there's shortcuts for #RustDesk and ad-hoc reverse #SSH tunnels.
I can test everything in a VM, then add changes, she'll pick it up eventually or right away.
Loosely inspired by @codemonkeymike's #nixbook.
Happy I Love Free Software Day!
Unfortunately, this year I could not join nor organize any in-person celebration, BUT of course I want to share my gratitude to the many, countless #FreeSoftware services I don’t merely use, but actually depend on.
Last year, I decided to focus only on #YunoHost, because it would have been crazy to list all the projects I use and I love.
This time, even if I will most certainly forget someone, I am challenging myself to mention all the #LibreSoftware my life is powered by.
Without further ado, THANK YOU to:
Lastly, but most importantly, the biggest thank you goes to all the free software libraries and dependencies the above mentioned #software are made of/built with, including #C, #JavaScript, #Python, #Rust, and all community-maintained programming languages.
I am super sorry if I forgot someone!
I just tried #rustDesk (because #TeamViewer keeps yeeting you out after minutes) and wow do I have to say it's awesome!
- #FOSS (though apparently with some proprietary dependencies? )
- works over mobile connection (LTE router), uses little data
- keyboard shortcuts just work (CTRL+C never worked for me in Teamviewer)
- clipboard sharing just works
- no ridiculous time limitation
#RustDesk rocks! #rust https://rustdesk.com/

So there i was, pooterising away from my own home, on dad's pooter, inside the #KFedora VM i'm still setting up, via #RustDesk [which today has behaved much better than t'other day] when abruptly the connection failed & RD insisted that the remote pooter was offline. Cobblers, i said to RD, & kept on retrying, but it insisted. Same story. Bloody RD, i moaned, & launched #AnyDesk in spite. Wut, same story? Are you both ganging up on me? Rang dad, asked if by any chance he's just had a blackout. Erm, yes, sheepish reply came... he tripped a circuit breaker by having too many kitchen appliances on at once.
And so it goes...
@shalien yes I think SSH is the easiest to get a reliable connection, but I'm a normie and can't handle command line-only access
And this homelab is part of a wider project to work out how normies can shelter from #bigtech creepiness, so I need to keep it GUI-heavy, and preferrably FOSS.
So I'll check out #Rustdesk - thank you!!!
@patrickleavy You various options, for command line only #ssh will be the easiest, but i think you want remote desktop access, the easiest I can think of is #Rustdesk https://github.com/rustdesk/rustdesk
