A major ship collision in UK waters sparks fears of a toxic chemical leak.

Scientists fear a major collision between a cargo ship carrying sodium cyanide and a tanker transporting jet fuel in the UK’s North Sea could cause a huge leak of toxic chemicals into delicate marine habitats, with potentially devastating consequences for local wildlife.

#Greenpeace: We are extremely concerned about multiple #toxic hazards

"Greenpeace says it's 'extremely concerned' about 'multiple toxic hazards' from the North Sea ship collision.

"We've been reporting that the cargo ship was carrying 15 containers of the toxic chemical sodium cyanide. It is not clear if this has entered the water.

"The tanker was transporting jet fuel for the US government, some of which is spilling into the sea.

"'As more information emerges about what the ships were carrying, we are extremely concerned about the multiple toxic hazards these chemicals could pose to marine life,' Paul Johnston, a senior scientist at the Greenpeace Research Laboratories at Exeter University, tells the AFP news agency.

"'The jet fuel that entered the water close to a breeding ground for harbour porpoises is toxic to fish and other sea creatures,' he adds."

In a statement, the Florida based company said: “A fire occurred as a result of the allision, & #fuel was reported released. The #StenaImmaculate crew abandoned the vessel following multiple explosions onboard. All Crowley mariners are safe & fully accounted for.”

The #JetFuel was owned by the #US govt. That’s consistent w/the vessel being part of a US govt program designed to supply the armed forces w/fuel during times of armed conflict or national emergency.

The #UnitedStates today extract more #CrudeOil than ever. However, most of that is light #Crude lacking the heavier molecules from which #Diesel or #JetFuel are synthesised. American #Refineries must import heavy crudes from #Canada and #Mexico to economically reach those products.

And that is why in the end #Tariffs were not imposed. #Fentanyl or #Migrants are just a side show.

Save The Jet Fuel Tax!

On Wednesday, the EU Council will vote on the Orban Government's crazy proposal to ban a #JetFuelTax in the EU until at least 2035. This is a slap in the face of democracy, fairness, and #ClimateAction. It would mean that the #aviation industry keeps polluting for free while the rest of us pay the price.

That's why we need you. We've written a draft email, and collected the contacts of every person who will be in that meeting. You just need to press send.

It's not too late! If we act now, we can convince one member state to block this destructive proposal.

"The U.S. EPA will withdraw its approval for Chevron to produce 18 #plastic-based fuels.

One of the chemicals intended to serve as #JetFuel was expected to cause #cancer in 1 in 4 people exposed over their lifetime.

The risk from another of the plastic-based chemicals, an additive to marine fuel, was more than 1 million times higher than usually considered acceptable — so high that everyone exposed continually over a lifetime would be expected to develop cancer."

#JetFueFax could raise £6bn a year in the #UK, says thinktank
"The report said it was a “common myth” that aviation fuel could not be taxed, with the UK having the right to tax domestic flights and, post-Brexit, flights to the EU. These account for 80% of departures. Securing the full revenues would require an “anti-tankering” law to ensure airlines bought 90% of the fuel for outbounds flight in the UK."

"After countries could not agree on earlier proposals that would introduce a minimum #EU tax rate for #JetFuel from 2028, they are now considering exempting both aviation and maritime fuels from these taxes for a further 20 years, a draft compromise seen by Reuters showed."

"#AirNewZealand has abandoned a 2030 goal to cut its carbon #emissions, blaming difficulties securing more efficient planes and sustainable #JetFuel.

Sustainable Aviation Fuels (#SAF) are a key part of the sector's strategy to cut emissions but airlines have struggled to purchase enough of it.
"[SAF] is more expensive than traditional fuels, and there is not enough capacity to produce that at scale," said Ellis Taylor from aviation analytics firm Cirium."

What would it take to make aviation green in the EU?

Most Europeans have heard of "flight shaming," and now the EU hopes green jet fuel will be the answer to aviation emissions. The bloc has set ambitious production targets, but not everyone is sold.
