The energy from solar on about 1 million acres of farmland would equal the energy available from the ethanol derived from 30 billion acres of corn.

Surprising?

Not very. How inefficient the whole corn for ethanol process is. Factor in the water, pesticides, and fertilizers needed to grow 30 billion acres of corn and you begin to get an idea about how much of a waste of resources corn for ethanol schemes for petrol are.

The same on a limited scale must apply to the UK.

This was fun and educational! Weighing and evaporation were most conclusive.

Smell worked, sort of. Only once the weather turned warm enough and the expired petrol smell is not nearly as obvious as fresh petrol. Not the best method.

Burn test was surprisingly useless, all samples burnt about the same with similar amounts of soot. Old petrol is only very slightly easier to ignite.

Evaporate if you have time or unit weight if not.

Another, much slower one is evaporation. Gasoline will largely evaporate (may leave some yellow clumps behind - that's what blocks your carburettor in spring after not using the outboard all winter), diesel will not.

I've also noticed they run through the same filter at vastly different speeds, but that's rather unspecific as I don't know the micron size of several layers of old t-shirt fabric 😆
