‘Along with specific projects it conducts for federal agencies, 18F also designed a public “de-risking guide” to help other parts of the government better vet and manage technology vendors. The guide along with the rest of 18F’s website was wiped from the internet, increasing the risk of government agencies being misled by technology vendors for a period until it the site was reinstated. 

‘“We’ve already seen a pattern from Musk, documented in the media, of Musk taking government money,” said one former 18F employee, pointing to the $38 billion Musk has collected in federal contracts to date. “He’s been public beneficiary number one, and if there’s no one around to say, ‘Hey, this contract is not written well, this is going to get us the wrong project, we don’t need to be spending this much money.’

Before being eliminated, 18F saved taxpayers billions in bad contracts and failed software projects over 11 years. I was very proud of my time in early-18F, from which we launched shared services and critical components for federal technologists, like cloud.gov, login.gov, and the US Web Design Standards. I was so driven by the mission and hooked on public service that when I termed out, I reapplied and came back in a permanent role in a neighboring group, where I still work today.

The Atlantic reported that members of the GSA team known as 18F were informed their roles had been “abolished as part of an agency reduction-in-force.” Among the team’s achievements was an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) program that allowed taxpayers to file directly with the agency for free instead of paying for filing software from Intuit TurboTax. 18F employees were also responsible for maintaining the government’s weather alerts and forecasts service. It’s unclear if IRS Direct File or weather.gov will continue to operate.

#herprogrammeerdeoverheid (Dutch) podcast about iRealisatie, a government organisation created to build the #opensource coronamelder app during the pandemic. It also changed how the dept of health does tech projects, from external development via public tenders to more in-house development (and early involvement of tech in the regulatory process). And most of it open-source code.

It reminds me a bit of #18F, a US government IT org recently terminated by the white house.
