I don't know if anybody else is affected by #Microsoft killing #Skype, but I have a Skype number that I've used for like 15 years. I like it. A buddy of mine runs "TossableDigits" and they can port that number out of Skype. I get get SMSs on it, do call forwarding or voicemail, and even use an API to make changes to how it behaves.

The other common use case for this is for people that want to give out disposable numbers. You can get a number, use it a while, then throw it away.

All based in the US, and they don't make any super special guarantees about privacy. So I'm not sure it's great if you want throwaway numbers for dubious purposes. But women who don't want to give out their real number to men they just met is a good use case. Or maybe even an on-call rota so that the on-call number is always the same, but forwards to whomever is on-call. APIs would let you do that automatically.

• It's worse than any #IRC, #Mumble or even the old #TeamSpeak & #Skype for that matter.

• It combines the disadvantages of #Forum, #paywalled #documentation, #chat and #voicechat with 0 redeeming qualities (unlike #Zulip & Mumble & #XMPP+#OMEMO) it's just an #InformationBlackhole!

I'm shure fecking #dread has better moderation and I'd rather use #MicrosoftTeams + #Slack cuz those at least have proper #moderation tools.

• And I'd rather subscribe to the #LKML and see my inbox getting hosed than using any shitty #SaaS!

Case in point: I'd rather #SelfHost all my comms infrastructure than to ever use something like Discord or any other #GDPR-violating SaaS that is just enshittification.

I'd rather recommend people to instead choose a tool that does everything but horrible to go with multiple smaller & good tools

I moved our weekly virtual drinks party from Skype to Jitsi a few weeks ago, after Microsoft fumbled the transition from Skype to #Teams and one of us couldn't join. I'm really impressed by the way Jitsi has come on since I last tried it in 2020: not only is the connection clear and stable, but #Jitsi makes better use of our inadequate bandwidth than #Skype ever did.

I've had a #Skype account that I'll hardly used for YEARS & just received a notice from #MSFT that they are "retiring" it & transitioning Skype subscribers to #MicrosoftTeams, whatever that is.

Since I'm not a #TeamPlayer, I'm not going to make the transition but I've got a $9.09 credit that I've got to use before they retire it.

PSA: вы уже слышали, наверное, что #Skype закрывается в мае. Так вот там запустили экспорт данных, который будет работать до самого закрытия *и ещё полгода* (до января 2026).

Так что спешить с экспортом особого смысла нет, но заявки на экспорт обрабатываются по несколько дней, и это время наверняка взлетит в мае, так что совсем забивать тоже не стоит. На текущий момент срок обработки составляет чуть меньше недели.

Архивы выдаются в несжатом (?!) tar (?!?), что довольно неожиданный выбор для такого некогда популярного сервиса, тем более от #Microsoft, Проводник Windows открыть такое не может, но можно использовать 7-Zip[7z].

Сообщения в экспорте просто свалены в кучу JSON'а, с которой без машинной обработки делать особо нечего. Нельзя было просто так взять и сделать экспорт статической веб-страницей, например. Telegram смог, но в Microsoft сделали специальное средство просмотра… тоже в браузере

This from the company bullying #Windows10 users to fork out for new hardware (unnecessarily) because it CHOSE to make #Windows11 incompatible.

This persistently invasive company is little more than another thieving, ecologically destructive American abuser.

So #Skype is shutting down and I get messages to that effect. I'm noticing there's no mention of giving me my money back. I've got $5 on their system, and while I haven't used it probably in six or seven years, I've kept the acct active because I don't want #Microsoft to have my money.

It's not much and won't bother me if it's lost, but it would bother me that Microsoft is just keeping these credit balances for themselves without permission. There should be a class action or deal with that.
