The Vancouver Island University campus where I work is located on former Department of National Defense lands, indeed up until just a few years ago a few classes were still being held in “huts” built in the 1940s! Those are all gone now, but there is still DND land (Army Reserve - Canadian Scottish Regiment - Princess Mary’s) just to the south of the campus, across 5th Street. I can see it from my office.

It is famously a location of a “Diefenbunker”.

It is infamously also the location of the former Nanaimo Indian Hospital.

Snuneymuxw now has most of this land as part of its reserve. Ceremonies were held last week. It's a good thing.

"“My auntie went to this hospital, and they starved her,” said Snuneymuxw member Mikiala Morgan.

Others in the community spoke of healing and reclamation. One Snuneymuxw member described the land’s return as “a full circle moment,” signifying not only a legal victory but a cultural and spiritual restoration. "

The intention is likely to create housing, and there may even be a partnership with VIU for student housing on the lands. We'll see what the Snuneymuxw First Nation decides. It is their land and their future.

I’m not keeping track or anything but this is at least the fourth Reddit post in the past few days I’ve seen where someone either got an overpayment notice from Social Security because someone worked under their Social Security number, or there was a tax return filed.

You can get a pin from the IRS, they’ll mail you a new one every year and you need it to file your tax return. Just know that once you ask them for it you can never make it stop. You can never take it back. I tried. The three different people I talked to at the IRS told me they’ve never had anyone ask them to take it off. And if you don’t get the pin number in the mail you can’t file your tax returns.

And that also won’t stop someone from working as you under your Social Security number.

But the fact that the IRS told this person that only an employer can issue a W-2 makes me think that IRS employee is 18 years old. If I send a W-2 to the IRS with an EIN number for a real employer how would they know I’m not that employer?

"The Internal Revenue Service is making plans to rescind the tax-exempt status of Harvard University, according to two sources familiar with the matter, which would be an extraordinary step of retaliation as the Trump administration seeks to turn up pressure on the university that has defied its demands to change its hiring and other practices.

A final decision on rescinding the university’s tax exemption is expected soon, the sources said.

The administration already has blocked more than $2 billion in funding from the nation’s oldest university, which is fighting the White House’s policy demands, citing the constitutional right of private universities to determine their own teaching practices.
