The Falsehood of Authorship as Authority

"The essence of #OpenScience is transparency; being open about all the steps that were taken in the scientific cycle that led to a #publication. This is much more about a different approach to #science rather than specific actions."

An unreasonably short History of Venice

I have written a short History of Venice — an Unreasonably short History of Venice, in fact.

During my walks in Venice, I very often explain the same bits of the History of Venice again and again.

When I decided to make a podcast of some of the many stories I tell during my history walks — the Venetian Stories Podcast — it became clear that I had to fill in the holes between all the various bits and pieces.

Without a basic chronological narrative, the stories would be hanging in the air, without sufficient context to make sense.

I therefore wrote the scripts for an initial series of podcast episodes to tell the story of Venice as succinctly as possible.

This ended up as seven episodes of about thirty minutes each.

Having written the scripts for the podcast, it was obvious to rework them into a reasonably coherent text.

Did you know that #GNU/ #FSF has its own #darknet application and protocol stack?

What is #GNUnet?

GNUnet is an
#alternative #network stack for building #secure, #decentralized and #privacy-preserving #distributed applications. Our goal is to replace the old insecure Internet protocol stack. Starting from an application for secure #publication of #files, it has grown to include all kinds of basic protocol components and applications towards the creation of a GNU internet.

Today, the actual use and thus the social requirements for a global network differs widely from those goals of 1970. While the Internet remains suitable for military use, where the network equipment is operated by a command hierarchy and when necessary isolated from the rest of the world, the situation is less tenable for civil society.

Due to fundamental Internet design choices, Internet traffic can be misdirected, intercepted, censored and manipulated by hostile routers on the network. And indeed, the modern Internet has evolved exactly to the point where, as Matthew Green put it, "the network is hostile".

We believe liberal societies need a
#network #architecture that uses the #anti-authoritarian #decentralized #peer-to-peer paradigm and #privacy-preserving #cryptographic #protocols. The goal of the GNUnet project is to provide a Free Software realization of this ideal.

As a PhD student, you will try to publish your work in peer reviewed academic journals. But how does peer review work? What things do you have to do, what can you do, and what should you not do? Here are some meta science insights on peer review in science. renebekkers.wordpress.com/peer

My #SEM shows a female of the #mite #Histiostoma sp. (H. feroniarum-complex, special fixation) on #rottenlemon from Italy, #feeding a mixture of #fungi and #bacteria. It is seen from above and displays the symmetrically #fenestrated #proterosomashield that i.a. stabilizes muscle origins and still needs research. I published research information on that mite as poster #publication.

Today I launched, @thedebugger a #publication that covers the political impact of the latest tech developments, mainly from a European perspective. I don't want only to inform, but to advocate for #privacy #digitalrights and technological sovereignty. And I find a matter of coherence to share it through the #fediverse ! It's a small contribution, but I will try my best to deliver something good!

If you want to check it, here is the first article, on #ai and #warfare :

The Debugger · AI and the Arms Industry: an OverviewThis piece covers a use of AI that is usually not so obvious, or not so present in the public discourse: weapons.
