The most magical night of my life #Aurora #AuroraAustralis #MilkyWay #Antarctica #Photography
Animating the sequence shows what is going on behind the clouds (a bit) more clearly. It's rather plain in these conditions.

Aurora over Norfolk Bay, 9th March 2025.
Quite a bright moon behind me with cloud diffusing it, no shadows.
As was likely to be the case, yesterday's surprise geomagnetic storm did not last long enough to be seen in my region's nighttime. But on the other side of the world some people got pictures while it happened. https://www.spaceweather.gov/communities/aurora-dashboard-experimental #SpaceWeather #aurora #AuroraBorealis #AuroraAustralis #astronomy
"G4 (Severe) Geomagnetic Storm Levels Observed" by NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center - Geomagnetic storm exceeded forecast model expectations. G4 conditions observed, Kp=8. Where it's nighttime, aurora should be extending to unusual latitudes away from the poles. https://www.spaceweather.gov/news/g4-severe-geomagnetic-storm-levels-observed #SpaceWeather #aurora #AuroraBorealis #AuroraAustralis #astronomy
"Geomagnetic storm level G3 watch for 16 Apr 2025" by NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center - Coronal Mass Ejection CME from the weekend will reach Earth tonight. G3 storm means forecast Kp=7 aurora tonight. But forecasts are not precise until an hour before arrival when satellites at Sun-Earth L1 (1M mi / 1.6M km away) can measure incoming solar wind. https://www.spaceweather.gov/news/g3-watch-16-apr-2025 #SpaceWeather #aurora #AuroraBorealis #AuroraAustralis #astronomy
"G3 (Strong) Geomagnetic Storm Watch for 23 Mar" by NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center - The Sun erupted a coronal mass ejection (CME) expected to reach Earth on March 23 UTC at G3 storm level. That means forecasted Kp=7 for aurora down to Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Massachusetts. https://www.spaceweather.gov/news/g3-strong-geomagnetic-storm-watch-23-mar #astronomy #aurora #AuroraBorealis #AuroraAustralis #CME #SpaceWeather
One more #FediWall for today's #FollowFriday: with solar cycle 25 at its maximum this year, aurorae will continue to be a thing for a while. Catch them all https://s.gwdg.de/FcoN6a
To be prepared for when the next aurora alert pops up, you can pick and start following accounts that are likely to make you aware of an ongoing event, so that you too can go out, take your own pictures, and share them with us?
In the meantime, going back to the amazing event in May last year, we have some background reading for you [in German] at https://www.mps.mpg.de/7926227/news_publication_21927472_transferred

The #AuroraAustralis putting on a show over the southern most point of #Australia. I was lucky enough to see the biggest solar storm in over 20 years from here this year during a 3 month trip in #Tasmania. One of the most magical feeling experiences of my life. A night I wont soon forget.
Victoria isn't particularly known for #aurora, but with the sun being at its solar maximum it's a great time to keep an eye on the night sky.
Despite spending about 9 weeks in Iceland and Norway (during late autumn/winter) the past 18 months, two of the best Auroras I've ever seen have been right here where you normally never see them. Fingers crossed for some more soon!
I know I'm in good company. But it's frustrating seeing geomagnetic storm alerts from #NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center SWPC indicating there would be aurora in the night sky at my latitude (for Portland, Oregon we need Kp>=7 to get aurora) ...except it's daytime and completely overcast here. Better luck for clear weather where it's nighttime. #aurora #AuroraBorealis #AuroraAustralis #astronomy #SpaceWeather
"G4 (Severe) Geomagnetic Storm Alert Threshold Reached at 1241 ET" by #NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center - Continuing effects of the CME (coronal mass ejection) exceeded G4 geomagnetic storm levels unexpectedly https://www.spaceweather.gov/news/g4-severe-geomagnetic-storm-alert-threshold-reached-1241-et #aurora #AuroraBorealis #AuroraAustralis #astronomy #SpaceWeather
