A beaver dam in a swampy forest in southern Poland.
This year's spring in this area is very dry. Beavers know how important water management is.
April 2025

The photo shows a beaver dam on a small, brown river that flows through a swampy forest. One third of the frame from the bottom shows a dam built of sticks debarked by beavers. Fresh green grass grows between the sticks. The center of the frame is a brown, swampy river that flows lazily from the right side of the frame and spreads wide in front of the dam. To the left of the water lies the crooked trunk of an old tree. The upper part of the frame is a dark swamp forest covered mainly with alder. Between the trees fresh spring grass. The entire scene is illuminated by the soft, warm afternoon sun.

Walking through a vibrant green marsh surrounding a small, shallow, slow-moving stream feeding into a lake. Many gray boulders are strewn across the muddy ground around the stream. One large flat boulder lies within the stream just in front of us. The marsh and lake are surrounded by a forest in which many of the trees are sporting gold, yellow and orange autumn foliage. The sky is a pale blue gray tinted pale gold along the horizon.

@andrewbriscoe Hehe... I know it seems a bit like misdirection and that picture could well have been from somewhere in Scotland, but here's another view from further away (and still only shows around 40-50% of the drop below).

View across a large valley toward a high-alpine hanging valley on the other side, sitting below fresh low hanging clouds forming in & above it. Pristine blue sky behind. The slopes reaching below into the main valley are covered in dense forest. In the foreground, a rocky creek is flowing down through the steep meadows. The picture was taken from a rock in the middle of the creek. A few young larch tress are growing nearby.

August 17, 1983: Three miles later, I was at Finerty Pond. The next good water on the trail was more than eight miles ahead, so I settled for bad water and pitched my tent for the night. I was not about to drink pond water without boiling it for several minutes. I was forced to drink hot chocolate with my meal. Mmmm, mmmm.

Standing in the shade beside a small pond surrounded by forest. A thin patch of cattails, tall water grasses and leafy plants lines the shore just in front of us. The wooded far shore is in sunshine to our left and in shade to our right. A strip of marsh with cattails and water grasses is adjacent to that far shore. The rest of the pond is open water. Rippled by a summer evening breeze, the surface mirrors a soft blue sky with puffy white clouds.

Photo of a beautiful, post-glacial valley with a classic U-shape. Beautiful high-alpine meadows and dense larch forest until the tree line. Dark, low hanging clouds are obscuring the surrounding bare mountain peaks, adding to the remote character of the scene. The sun manages to break through in the foreground and some patches near the end of the valley.

Rubha nan Gall lighthouse
is located north of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. The name means "Stranger's Point" in Scottish Gaelic. It was built in 1857 by David and Thomas Stevenson and is operated by the Northern Lighthouse Board. The lighthouse was automated in 1960 and the nearby former keepers' cottages are privately owned.
