The final #tracktuesday of the training block, featuring 6 reps of 1 mile at half marathon pace/effort. I had to stop to retie my shoelace in a tunnel during the last rep, so that one's not accurate. But all in all, pretty happy with how controlled it felt.

A slightly different #parkrunsandwich this morning as it had no #parkrun in it as I was on run director duties. It looked lovely, but there was a brutally cold wind that chilled us all during our volunteering, and turned out to be a headwind all the way home.

Legs still a bit sore from Thursday's squats, and yesterday's marathon pace long run session. But it was a #parkrunsandwich morning to go and celebrate a couple of friends 400th #parkrun and get that mileage in. I thought the time would be slower that it was as I was taking it nice and easy, aware I still had 4 and a half miles to run home after some snacking and chat. Some light partial eclipse viewing afterwards. Over 25 miles in about the same number of hours.

Questioning my life choices again this morning. A road half marathon without the benefit of musical distraction (the country roads remained open to traffic), with a late start due to the massive queues for the too-few loos. Already grumpy because I found a crack in my car's windscreen, went off too fast. Until we hit the back of the 20-mile race (which started a mile and a half away, effectively) I was running mostly on my own. I thought I had died a little towards the end, but there's only really one bad mile split in there.

Finished 5th lady and 2nd V40 (but got the V40 prize as 1st V40 was second lady).

Hamstring now very tight, but didn't explode. Definitely not going to try and pick it up and try for a time at London.

62.52 miles (100.63km) for the week, with 9 at 3:19 marathon pace, and (6+13) at half marathon pace. 5 weeks to go.

First bike ride of the year (I'm a fair weather cyclist) cycling out to #parkrun and back (it turns out that having an appropriate amount of air in both tyres makes it considerably easier to cycle). I had forgotten how cycling breaks me for running, so everything hurt on a deliberately easy-paced run ahead of racing tomorrow. Look at those bars though (let's not mention how the first half is uphill, and the second half is back down again).

A classic #parkrunsandwich this morning, and first time up the hill in a while after being on run director duties. Not too bad of a showing with an official time of 24:26 for the actual #parkrun and home by 10:30 (just that bit too cold to hang around in shorts).

Tokyo marathon done and six-star journey completed. It turns out that even if you run a marathon 'easy' it's still quite hard.

Average temperature during training: 4°C (39°F). Temperature at start of marathon: 12°C (54°F).

Super congested at the start, which continued for at least the first 4k (2.5 miles) where I nipped off course for a comfort break. As with many big city marathons it suffers from lots of runners failing to follow race etiquette (weaving, cutting across, suddenly stopping, walking in the middle of the route) and I'm not sure arranging the drinks stations by bib number was a fantastic help. They tended to appear all of a sudden on only one side, too. Paper cups, but filled less than half, so I started taking two per station to try and keep hydrated.

Managed to keep to 3:30 pace for the majority of the run, fading in the last 8k (5 miles) which had no shade at all. Stopped completely at the final few drinks stations (off to the side, out of the way) to get on fluids. No point in doing unnecessary damage with London 8 weeks away.

Didn't walk at all (I thought I might have to at some point with the heat), and picked it up for the final stretch on the cobbles. Official time 3:35:29.

Medals and finisher goodies collected, then back to the hotel for a nice hot bath before popping back to the charity lounge for light snacks and thanking them for my place. Then used the voucher they provided for some fries and a strawberry milkshake to take back to the hotel to start the refuelling process.

A shame about the weather, but you can't do anything about it. At least the photos should turn out well. It's going to be 7°C (feels like 4°C) and raining tomorrow.

Finishes the week with 48.8 miles (78.55km) run.

Well that was worryingly warm, and an hour earlier than race start tomorrow. Alright in the shade and breeze, but hot in the full glare of the sun, let's hope the course is shady (or I can find shade). Ran the OG Japanese #parkrun in Futakotamagawa nice and easy at tomorrow's race pace with a few strides towards the end. Bust with lots of tourists, and dead flat. Time to go for a very gentle bimble round the Gyoen National Garden, carb loading and early dinner and bedtime.

Maranoia in full effect on this morning's (actually) easy 7 miles around the harbourside. Every step overanalysed for potential signs of injury whilst being buffeted by the blustery winds. 55.10 miles (88.69km) for the week, with 6 miles at half marathon pace, 10 miles at 3:20 marathon pace, and two runs of 12+ miles. Into the taper now where invariably you feel rubbish as the intensity drops off, but it's all part of the process and comes good by race day.

This was intended to be an easy 7 miles after run directing at #parkrun but I had some adrenaline to burn off having attempted to run the defib up a muddy hill in boots (I had to walk the steepest bits). It wasn't needed, mercifully, but those people who took photos (I tried to block line of sight to the casualty) need to give their heads a wobble. Lots of people stopped, or offered to, which is good to see. Ambulance arrived in good time and did their thing (aren't paramedics young these days?). Gorgeous weather, good to see the sun and much warmer than it has been (two days in a row without gloves).

Penultimate marathon-pace run of the block, 10 miles at 3:21 pace as part of a half-marathon long run. Late out after getting in my #scyforrunners beforehand. Nearly didn't happen at all due to menstrual nausea, but ibuprofen worked its charm (up until the last km of my cool down, which meant cutting it shorter than planned and walking home in the cold).

Penultimate #tracktuesday session of *this* marathon block done, with 4 reps of 1.5 miles (with 800m recovery between reps). Nice and consistent with 10:34, 10:31, 10:29, 10:38 and an improvement on the same session when I ran it 4 weeks ago.

Not too wrecked following Sunday's half, and rounded up to 12 miles for the day.

It turns out I am fitter than I realised. Pootled down to Exeter at early o'clock for their half marathon with plans to run around 1:35. I haven't been training for a half, in fact I don't think I've even run a half since September 2023. It was a good opportunity to do a full dress rehearsal kit-wise for Tokyo. I had forgotten how light and bouncy my race shoes are (I haven't worn them since London marathon last year).

Perfect conditions (cold, still & dry) and I made sure to start near the front and get a nice strong start as the paths aren't that wide and are shared with other users. Too fast, but I just kept going at that pace. I had a very chipper runner on my shoulder giving me encouragement to go faster, which I really didn't want to do. He dropped me eventually in the last 5k (thank goodness) as the fatigue and miles in my legs (particularly Friday) started to hit.

1:31 dead, and 4th lady. 29th overall and 1st in my age category. I quite like this racing without the pressure to try and run PBs.

Finishes the week with 65.03 miles (104.67km) run, with (6+13) 19 miles at half marathon pace, 10 miles at 3:23 marathon pace, and three runs of 13+ miles. 3 weeks to go 🇯🇵

I ran my pre-parkrun miles too quickly, having left the house 10 minutes later than planned. I then carried that energy into the #parkrun running that too fast in a 23:14. Then hopped in to do some crowd control as funnel manager for a bit (there were 564 participants today) which earned me my 150th #volunteer credit.

Set the world to rights afterwards, joined by a cake-seeking robin.
