@cassey You could always install a #TilingWindowManager on top of #MacOS that works fine.
I had the same issue on MacOs.

I was using #amethyst for a while but it honestly sucked compared to my gold-standard: XMonad.

I’ve seen a few more MacOS TWM’s pop up lately which you should check out: #Yabai and #Aerospace are both ones I haven’t tried.

In the Linux world, #XMonad is my happy place. I long to run it on MacOS but without X11, it’ll probably be called WayMonad or MacMonad.

@takeonrules
Xmonad deserves a go. I can't use i3 because it is
so Limited. It is perhaps easier, but I don't know. I didn't know Haskell but I did it anyway. I've been on #Xmonad for more than a decade and I have yet to see anything better.
i3 is a backup I use while setting up my xmonad that I can't wait to get out of. Xmonad is like the emacs of window managers. Of course there is Exwm. But that might take you a minute or two.

Do you have any experience with or opinion about the #Hyperland compositor? I would like to hear about it, as it sounds awesome on paper and looks great on screenshots. I'm planning to change to a tiling window manager and wonder how it compares to other alternatives. I have tried #Qtile before and liked it. I was also interested in #xmonad, because it can be configured with #Haskell, but I'll rather focus on #Wayland options and I think there are no ports in the horizon.

Anybody have Wayland-compatibile tiling compositor (WM) recommenddations? I'd been using #xmonad for years, but it doesn't work with Wayland. #KDE #Plasma with #bismuth was good for me, but Bismuth doesn't work with latest Plasma. I've really not found anything good with Gnome, and the options like #sway and #hyprland require a bunch of time to configure and don't do things like remembering what to do when I plug in different external monitors like KDE does. I appreciate KDE's automation.

@Riedler This is timely. I'd been using #xmonad for years, but it doesn't work well with Wayland. #KDE #Plasma with #bismuth was good for me, but Bismuth doesn't work with the latest KDE.

Last change on the software side of my dev setup was to start using #PaperWM. It’s so awesome! It’s fast, smooth, has exactly what I need from a window manager, and it’s rock solid. In the past I’ve been using #awesomewm, #xmonad, #i3wm and while I liked them all better than classic floating WMs, only PaperWM feels exactly like what I always needed. And, on a 120hz display its quick animations look fantastic.

Also figured out why #spawnOn to start a window on a specific #workspace did not seem to work properly in my #Xmonad tiling window manager setup. Switched from #lxterminal to #xfce4-terminal. The latter has a "disable-server" option to use one process per window. The former or gnome-terminal don't have this option (anymore). However a per window process seems necessary for Xmonad's spawnOn. Now also integrated some more autostarting of stuff into my Xmonad setup.

So I’ve decided to go down the rabbit hole and set up my Xmonad environment again. I’ll be tweaking it to adapt it to my art production workflow.

Why Xmonad and not something more modern? Cuz Xmonad works great, I can do what I want and X11 is still my display server of choice for obvious reasons (the main one being I’ve invested time and effort on it)

I’ll look into some Wayland WM when the time is right and Wayland is useful for my case.

Realized I may be behind the times running #XOrg #xmonad and started to look at Wayland options (beyond just trying sway).

This made me curious where others are in their xorg to Wayland journey.
