One year ago, my visit to Sierra Madera impact crater in West Texas was my second time there. On my first visit in 2007, I took pictures which are now displayed on the Wikipedia page about the crater. It was the 2nd confirmed impact site I had visited (after Meteor Crater AZ) out of a total of 10 now. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sierra_M #astronomy #geology #space #spacegeek #travel

A year ago on the return trip from #SolarEclipse2024, I posted a picture (which I took the previous day) of the Sierra Madera impact crater near Fort Stockton, Texas. The crater is 8mi/13km wide and US Hwy 385 goes through the middle of it. But the highway is the only spot you can see it since the rest of the crater is private property. So it was easy to keep the stop quick, take a few pictures and continue the drive. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112258 #astronomy #geology #space #spacegeek #travel

I made my second visit to the Sierra Madera impact crater. It's 8mi/13km across. If you look up the Wikipedia page, it has a picture from my first time there. #astronomy #geology

A year ago I was on the drive back home on the #SolarEclipse2024 road trip. From the far point of the trip in Houston, I made some more #space related stops on the way home: Sierra Madera impact crater near Fort Stockton TX, NSF's Very Large Array radiotelescope near Socorro NM and Meteor Crater near Flagstaff AZ. Overnight stops were at Austin TX, Las Cruces NM, Flagstaff AZ and Brigham City UT. #astronomy #space #spacegeek #travel

One year ago, the day after the April 8, 2024 total #SolarEclipse2024, I continued south from Dallas to Houston to see NASA Johnson Space Center, with a quick peek before the visitor center closed for the day. I returned for more there the next day. That day was the road trip's farthest point with dinner at the coast in Galveston. After that everything was on the journey back home. #spacegeek #travel

Marcia quoted me in her article, "I have arrived in the path of totality!" After the interview, we chatted about where we met before. I remembered her from 10 years earlier in 2014 at NASA's CRS-3 launch (SpaceX Falcon 9 & Cargo Dragon to ISS) where I had a "NASA Social" one-time social media pass and she was one of the pro media covering it. NASA TV showed us at adjacent seats asking questions in the post-launch news conference. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112232 #astronomy #spacegeek #eclipse #travel

One year ago was the day before the April 8, 2024 Total #SolarEclipse2024. I got to Mesquite, Texas (eastern Dallas metro) around mid-day to try to arrive ahead of the crush of traffic as everyone came from everywhere to the path of totality. Even before I found a place to get lunch, I met a news crew preparing to cover the next day's festivities in downtown. I was interviewed by AP aerospace reporter Marcia Dunn. spacey.space/@AstroHawk/112231 #astronomy #spacegeek #eclipse #travel

"SpaceX just took a big step toward reusing Starship’s Super Heavy booster" by @arstechnica - First test-firing of a previously-flown #SuperHeavy booster (1st stage of #Starship) indicates preparation to re-fly it. No word on which flight it's intended for, or if that decision has been made yet. arstechnica.com/space/2025/04/ #NewSpace #SpaceX #spacegeek #business

👋 New Nerd Alert! Just Landed 🚀

I break things in code, AI, and tech—sometimes on purpose, sometimes… not. 🤖💥 When I’m not debugging life, I’m lost in anime, cartoons, space, and the cosmos. 🌌

Somewhere between contemplating laws, power, and administration and convincing myself this time I’ll finish that new programming language.

Still figuring this place out—so if I break something… no, I didn’t. 😆 Got cool recommendations? Let’s talk!

"Astronomers realize mysterious TV signal in their data bounced off an airplane" by @Spacecom - Mystery solved how television broadcast radio signals sometimes interfere with Murchison radiotelescope in Western Australia, even though the distant transmitters are not in line-of-sight. Now knowing the radio signals are reflecting off passing airplanes, astronomers can more easily filter them out of their science data. space.com/space-exploration/te #radio #astronomy #spacegeek #aviation #avgeek

"Human Altitude" by XKCD comic (mirror bots @xkcd @xkcdbot ) - After false starts, in the larger scale of history Humans have rapidly increased the maximum altitude achieved since first taking flight in balloons, then airplanes, then spacecraft. Since the 1970s our maximum altitude has remained in Low Earth Orbit. It goes to show the Cold War competition pushed us to the Moon before we were ready to sustain the effort. Let's try again. xkcd.com/3039/ #aviation #space #avgeek #spacegeek

#SpaceX #Starship🚀 is larger in mass and volume than a Space Shuttle orbiter, which explains why the debris field from Starship was much bigger than recently-observed re-entries of satellites or rocket bodies. Also lighting was ideal for observation in the Caribbean and Greater Antilles Islands with clear skies just after sunset. Since there was no crew on Starship, it was safe to enjoy a spectacular and very rare view. #NewSpace #spacegeek
