getting back into Python is weird because like every time I do there's a new fresh hotness to theoretically end all hotnessess re: package installation

and then the next time I get back in people are like, "that was such horseshit,
this is the thing"

"wheel is bad, but poetry: so good!"
"poetry is
shit, something something else is good (I dunno I kinda don't remember the name for this one)"
"we don't need that old one, we have WHEEL!"

motherfuckers

(yes, these are real things)

There's been recent discussion about #POSIX & the #bash_shell. Some shells are awesome but don't even pretend to follow the POSIX standards. The #fish_shell is a good example.

Portability can be useful, but context matters too. Why deviate from standards? #LSB excludes #RubyLang but specifies #Perl & #PythonLang. #XDG is needlessly confusing. Distros may deviate from the #Linux #FHS because "reasons."

Goals & targets matter more than portability for its own sake.

New account, new intro post
(yes this is pretty much copy/pasted with a couple of tweaks)

Hi! I'm Skye, who used to be
@skye@blahaj.zone

Some quick facts about me:
- I'm
#transfem
- I have
#autism
- My sona, also called Skye, is a transfem shark
- I live in the
#UK (aka TERF Island :/ )

My hobbies:
- I do a lot of programming in languages such as
#c++ , #rustlang , #kotlin and #pythonlang
- I know a decent amount about HPC programming (I've used
#cuda , #opencl , #hiplang and #vulkan compute)
- I really love old computers, esp ones to do with the history of
#HPC, such as #SGI machines - sadly I do not own any of these computers as of writing this :(
- I've participated in the homebrew scenes for the Original Xbox, and the PS3
- On the note of consoles, I own: an
#xboxone S, a #PS3, an #originalxbox, a #Wii, and a #GameCube
- Other than programming aligned interests, I really like:
-
#trains (expect me to post a lot of train photos/videos when I go on them lol)
-
#cosplay - sadly I've never actually owned a cosplay or made one, however, I've been to quite a few comiccons around the UK, and one day, when I have the money, I'd love to make/buy a cosplay (I might make a cosplan post at somepoint?)
- I'm also into
#mtb , and when I do it I may upload videos of cool shit I do lol

Shows I've watched and loved (and where my cosplans mostly come from lol - also, these are in no particular order):
- The Dragon Prince -
#thedragonprince
- She-Ra (2018) -

After 132 commits and 6 reviewers, github.com/mozilla/uniffi-rs/p is finally merged \o/.

UniFFI can generate bindings for Rust async functions/methods to Python, Swift and Kotlin, with native async runtimes (resp. `asyncio`, `Task` and `suspend`).

That’s really exciting! Rust `Future` being driven by a foreign language async runtime, that’s pure fun.

i just read the article below, a non-lazy chunk of analysis and recommendations that impressed me. I've been saying for as long time that packaging foolishness is an existential threat to Python, so i like to see this kind of post.

How to improve Python packaging, or why fourteen tools are at least twelve too many | Chris Warrick chriswarrick.com/blog/2023/01/

Chris Warrick · How to improve Python packaging, or why fourteen tools are at least twA journey to the world of Python packaging, a visit to the competition, a hopeful look at the future, and highlights from a disappointing discussion.

I find it interesting that #Python seems to have replaced #Ruby as my go-to #scriptingLanguage?
My professional #coding experience is mostly with #RubyLang, and I've probably done the majority of my personal #scripting in it, along with #Bash script, but for the past couple of months I've mostly used #Python3.

At first it was to familiarise myself more with #PythonLang, but I can't quite put my finger on it why I'm still more likely to start a script in Python after this initial period.
