Head of a Buddha, anonymous, 800 - 850
This head probably comes from one of the 504 Buddha statues placed on and around the great Buddhist monument of Borobudur. All these figures represent the Buddha seated, with his eyes cast down. The raised spot between the eyebrows, the urna, and the protuberance on the head, the ushnisha, signify the Buddha’s holiness.

Kuvera (Jambhala), anonymous, 850 - 930
The god of prosperity was worshipped by Hindus (who called him Kuvera) and Buddhists (under the name Jambhala). During recent research a gold coin and gold and silver foil were discovered in the base of the statue, probably with an inscription. These lent the statue protection and divine power. The consecration of statues with the addition of such small objects is common in the Himalayas, but exceptional in Indonesia.

Spice box, anonymous, c. 1600
The spice trade was the most important goal of the journeys to Asia. Pepper, nutmeg, mace and cinnamon were very costly commodities. Accordingly, they were offered at table in an opulent manner. This spice box is in the shape of the Mauritius, one of the ships that had already sailed to Asia before the VOC was founded. Its lid (the deck) conceals little compartments for different spices.

Salome with the Head of John the Baptist, Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen, 1524
Salome danced seductively for King Herod, and, as a reward, she was granted a wish. Urged on by her mother Herodias, Salome asked for the head of John the Baptist, who had criticized Herodias’ adultery with the king. Salome is showing us her prize, the saint’s head on a platter.

The Grey Horse, Philips Wouwerman, c. 1646
A grey horse, whose reins are held by a boy, plays the leading role in this small panel. The horse stands out
clearly against the dramatic cloudy sky. Wouwerman’s rendering of the animal with its almost palpable coat
is very lifelike. By choosing a low vantage point, the artist strengthened the painting’s monumental effect.

View of Ambon, anonymous, c. 1617
This is a view of the Mollucan island of Ambon with a portrait of its first Dutch governor, Frederik Houtman, at the lower right. At centre is the Portuguese Fort Victoria, which was seized by the Dutch East India Company in 1605 because of the lucrative clove production. Houtman initially maintained good contacts with the Ambonese chiefs, but the company later mounted ruthless ‘punitive expeditions’ to counter the sale of cloves to its rivals.

Still Life with Flowers, Balthasar van der Ast, c. 1625 - c. 1630
A magnificent bouquet of tulips, roses, iris, columbine and gillyflowers is set in a ribbed glass vase. The artist
first made a detailed drawing on the prepared panel before beginning to paint. In the intervening centuries,
some of the pigments, primarily the lighter colours, have become transparent, allowing the underdrawing
to show through.

The Bookshop and Lottery Agency of Jan de Groot in the Kalverstraat in Amsterdam, Isaac Ouwater, 1779
A group of men fight to enter the lottery agency. It is the start of the sale of the Generaliteitsloterij (Generality Lottery), forerunner of the still existing Staatslotterij (State Lottery). Hotel guests at either side look on amused, including a Black man (left). His presence was not unusual. More Black people lived in Amsterdam in the late 18th century than in the previous century.

Portrait of Adam Wachendorff, with a Putto Blowing Bubbles, Cornelis Ketel, 1574
The sitter, Adam Wachendorff, can be identified from the family coat of arms on his watch case. He was the secretary of the London offices of the Hanseatic League, a trading alliance of European cities. The Greek inscription on the original frame (‘Man is a soap bubble’) and the naked youth blowing bubbles on the reverse allude to the transience of human life.

Maurits, Prince of Orange (1567-1625), Michiel Jansz van Mierevelt, c. 1613 - c. 1620
Prince Maurits was stadholder and military commander of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. He sired eight children with six different mistresses. As he refused to marry he had no legal successor. Maurits stands proud in a ceremonial gilded suit of armour, his helmet and gloves are on the table. This design had been the norm for state portraits since 1551, when it was first devised by the Italian painter Titian.
