Estonian musician Olev Roomet learned to play the torupill (or Estonian #bagpipe) in his 50s and for a while was the only living player of the instrument; he trained 25 new bagpipers before his death OTD in 1987 https://cromwell-intl.com/travel/estonia/?s=mb #travel #Estonia
Some more #bagpipes…
The bock or Bohemian #bagpipe includes various single-drone instruments from Czechia, Poland, Austria and southern Germany. It was first mentioned in the Zbraslav chronicle, written between 1335-1339. Its revival has mostly happened in Czechia, but it's gaining ground in Austria too. A typical bock is bellows-blown, allowing the piper to sing along, and features a drone 2 octaves below the chanter's root note.

Bagpipes have been played for centuries throughout Europe, North Africa and West Asia. Many of these traditions have experienced a revival during the last few decades, e.g., the säckpipa, or Swedish #bagpipe, died out during the early 20th century. In 1981 a maker created an updated säckpipa based on extant models in museums, and designed it to play well in ensembles. It has become quite popular since.
This is Sommarvals (summer waltz):

Huzzah! Today is my first #JukeboxFridayNight participation. I guess the theme is #plants ?
Seems pretty open to interpretation.
In 1997, this song got a bit of radio time in the #TwinCities and then faded into obscurity.

I should add this to my list of pop/rock songs that feature #bagpipe
Super interesting blend of styles, including bagpipe, some Indian stuff, and trip hop. Catchy too.
I hear a nice #bagpipe riff, I hit "like":
Ignis Fatuu - Wörterschmied
@LilahTovMoon that's too kind...
#Bagpipe would be better...
Estonian musician Olev Roomet, born OTD in 1901, became interested in the torupill (or Estonian #bagpipe) in his 50s; for a while he was the only living player of that instrument https://cromwell-intl.com/travel/estonia/?s=mb #travel #Estonia #music
Ugh!
I've been generally good at avoiding those sorts of rabbit holes, although recently YT *once again* thought I must actually really really really want to watch #transphobic weirdos associated with US politics. Easy to avoid clicking on those ones but still annoying to see!
My only real concern with the #bagpipe content is that I am watching at bedtime (in lieu of reading due to ongoing eye problems) and bagpipe music is NOT late-night-neighbour friendly!
Use this one #WeirdTrick to broaden your knowledge of world #music #instruments that you've previously never heard of:
Watch a SINGLE #bagpipe video on #YouTube.
You will discover dozens, perhaps hundreds or even thousands of bagpipe-style instruments unique to cultures around the world as YT floods your timeline with them for 3 weeks (and counting!) thereafter.
My band, Vox Vulgaris, just released a new single:

"A percussive jam is joined by heavy brass, before the two bagpipes take on a medieval French melody from the late 15th century Bayeux Manuscript."

Mildly disappointed that I can’t find a #bagpipe cover of #Aerosmith’s “Livin’ on the Edge”. Don’t suppose there’d be a #music aficionado out there who knows different, by any chance?
