Another great account to follow with great ideas for using this platform is @MastodonMigration . They recently published a long but VERY nice list of good accounts to follow for various interests.

(Oh, yes... I almost forgot. #Thread posts tend to use the spool emoji.🧵 Also not required, but recommended so people are more likely to notice that they need to read beyond the primary toot.)

As soon as you can, add to your profile and add a profile picture. You would also do well to post an #Introduction toot. (Posts here are called "toots"-- and yes, it is funny.)

There is no algortithm here. What you see is 100% based on which accounts and hashtags you follow-- and you can follow hashtags here.

Use hashtags to get more traffic, but keep them relevant to the topic. Using fake hashtags for traffic is frowned upon here.

#Welcome! Some folks jump into a pool head-first, but others need to wade in slowly. That's okay. You're not alone. I took some time at first, too.

Overall, it's very positive and friendly here.

Note that there is NO algorithm, so your feed is determined by what you RT and what accounts and hashtags you follow (yes, you can follow hashtags here). And your posts get better traction when you use hashtags.

Regardless of your interests, be sure to follow @feditips and @mastodonmigration. They have some great information about the #Fediverse and easy-to-understand advice on how to be a power user on #Mastodon.

You can edit your posts (YAY!😀) and follow hashtags here. A few good hashtags to follow include #HashtagGames, #ThreeGoodThings, #Dogstodon, #Catstodon, and #HootinTootinTuesday.

Try to include #AltText for images, whenever you can. There are many visually impaired people here, and the Fediverse prides itself on being inclusive. (Be sure to check the AltText yourself, sometimes, as it can sometimes have info not in the toot itself, or simply be hilariously funny.)

DEFINITELY find out who your instance admin is, and follow them. That way, you'll be sure to hear about issues with your server or other important news in your community.

I like my one rose bush in my garden just the way it is. But I do recognize that as it rains and over time, that rose bush will change and grow, flowering differently with the seasons and with the weather.

#Change might not be desired, and it isn't always easy, but change does always happen.

We can enjoy the moment we are in and fertilize as best we can (to have more #roses in the future), or we can complain that "there used to be more flowers and I want my old roses back."

The #Fediverse is changing. It is an "internet nation of immigrants" right now, and we need to #welcome them.

Other rites of passage for recent #TwitterMigrants:

* Being chewed out for referring to a Toot as a Tweet

* Being politely corrected for not using #AltText

* Starting a flame war by mentioning that you occasionally still go back and check your old #BirdSite account

* Unintentionally starting a debate about how to properly use (and not use) the "Favortite" Star, just because you have been "liking" toots here.

Those high #Twitter view counts were from simply being put in someone's suggested scrolled feed.

For example, try to scroll SLOWLY through videos on your phone in #YouTube. Then go look at your view history. A lot of videos you never watched but which played for only a few seconds will be there. That's similar to how you got such high view counts on #Twitter. A lot of folks who never stopped to read it counted as "views."

Here on #Mastodon, be sure to check out & follow accounts like @feditips and @mastodonmigration for tech advice and help requests. They have some great helpful feed to look through, and can answer all kinds of questions.

Use lots of #hashtags to help your toots get seen more often, and #follow hashtags for topics you're interested in. There is no algorithm here, shoving things into anyone's feed, so hashtags and #following are your best way to find feed you enjoy.

There is no algorithm here to push posts into your feed, so be sure to use hashtags generously. You can also follow #hashtags.

There are no advertisements here, but you're always welcome to promote your own work.

Be sure to add #AltText to any images you post. Mastodon tries to be very open to everyone.
