Moon Visits Sister Stars

Sometimes, the Moon visits the Pleiades. Technically, this means that the orbit of our Moon takes it directly in front of the famous Pleiades star cluster, which is far in the distance. The technical term for the event is an occultation, and the Moon is famous for its rare occultations of all planets and several well-known bright stars.

Moon & Pleiades
========================

On April 1st, 2025, between 20:45 and 23:45 (UTC), our moon passed in front of the Pleiades. Of course, our skies were completely cloudy, so I wasn’t able to capture the actual event, but due to the brightness of the moon compared to M45, creating a nice capture would have been complicated anyway.

Therefore, I used archive material (my M45 capture from November 2024 and the Moon from January 2022), to create an artistic composition of the event.

Last night we were treated to the Waxing Crescent Moon cozying up to the Pleiades star cluster just after sunset.

A low cloud was kind enough to pass in front of the moon when I took this photo, dimming its glow and revealing the line of craters while the unobscured stars were still shining brightly.

More images from last night.

First is Jupiter and a few of its moons.

Second is M 78, also known as NGC 2068, a reflection nebula in the constellation Orion, 1350 light years away. It is also known as the Casper the friendly ghost nebula.

Third photo are of the Pleiades. The Pleiades are visible with the naked eye and are about 444 light years away.

Seven Sisters versus California

On the right, dressed in blue, is the Pleiades. Also known as the Seven Sisters and M45, the Pleiades is one of the brightest and most easily visible open clusters on the sky. The Pleiades contains over 3,000 stars, is about 400 light years away, and only 13 light years across. Surrounding the stars is a spectacular blue reflection nebula made of fine dust.
