Moonquakes Surprisingly Common

Apollo seismometer data from 1972-77 detected 62 moonquakes near the surface, some strong enough to shift furniture. Unlike #Earth's quakes, the #moon's stiff rock vibrates longer. Causes may include Earth's tidal gravity and heat. Future #lunar homes must be quake-resistant. Buzz Aldrin is shown with a seismometer in an image.

A distant galaxy is home to a ravenous supermassive black hole that appears to be playing with its food. Located over 12 million light-years from Earth, a spiral galaxy known as NGC 4945 is blowing powerful winds of material from the supermassive black hole located at its core. @LiveScience has more on this “messy eater.”

Spiral galaxy NGC 7331, also known as the Caldwell 30, is pretty similar to our Milky Way in terms of mass, size and shape. Located in the constellation Pegasus, Caldwell 30 is about 45 million lightyears away from us. The galaxy got the nickname Caldwell 30 because it is a member of the group of 86 objects catalogued by astronomer Sir Patrick Moore. He named the objects the Caldwell Objects because his full surname is actually Caldwell-Moore.

A glowing, circular nebula with a bright, textured outer ring that fades into a dark background filled with stars. The center of the ring is a smooth, teal-blue area with faint, cloudy structures and small bright points. The ring itself appears reddish-orange with intricate filaments extending outward like wispy tendrils. Surrounding the nebula, the dark space is scattered with bright white stars, some with distinct diffraction spikes.

NGC 2685, a.k.a., the Helix Galaxy

I was so disappointed with my first go at processing this one that I spent basically an entire day sorting through all of the subframes and tossing out all of the bad ones. Turns out there was a lot of them, which contributed to the low quality of the end result. This time turned out better, but I think the raw data just isn't good enough to get the image I want. I'm definitely going to try this one again in the future.
