Koala 'overabundance' - 700 euthanised , some sterilised
The species is often treated like a “pest”.

"When plantations are harvested, all trees are eventually cut down, forcing koalas to move across roads where they're at risk of being struck by cars, or onto private property where they're attacked by dogs, or into national parks where they're already overabundant...The area surrounding Budj Bim has been systematically logged since the 2019/2020 bushfires, likely leaving thousands of koalas homeless...Koalas don’t understand the difference between native forest and a plantation. It’s food. It’s shelter. Without these two things, they die."

Yahoo News · Freak weather event in Australian national park leads to estimated 700 dead koalasBy Michael Dahlstrom

via #EarthlyEducation

we are living through an #ExtinctionCrisis unlike anything in human history—over a million #species are at risk of disappearing in the coming decades. #ecosystems that have taken millions of years to evolve are unravelling before our eyes, driven by #HabitatDestruction, #climate chaos, #pollution, and endless #extraction. every species lost is a thread pulled from the web of life, and sooner or later, that web collapses.

Please consider reading and signing this 👇 petition for radical reform of the UN 🇺🇳, or boosting if you have already signed it.

The petition is relevant to crises such as: #RussianinvasionofUkraine
#israelipalestinianconflict

#Climatechange
#ExtinctionCrisis

The petition proposes to break the status quo at the UN, abolishing the vetoes and permanent seats in the “Security” Council.

The petition is a little longer than average, but, I believe, quite readable!

HOME UNSETTLED

Settlers are detached from the land and mostly mistake "Little boxes made of ticky tacky" as 'home.' But now
"Climate change is forcing us to rethink our sense of ‘home’ – and what it means to lose it."

Val Plumwood ... "argues that, under capitalism, the idea of personal belonging to a particular place or dwelling is often framed as being more important than many other vital attachments to place, such as connection to land. She uses the term “shadow places” to describe the ecosystems we exclude and exploit – including our forests and waterways – even though they are fundamental to our existence. These places provide essential labour, nourishment and the conditions we need to survive and flourish. For Plumwood, an expanded sense of “home” would encompass the broader ecological context we exist within."

" Indigenous Australian law scholar Irene Watson explains colonisers were already alienated from a sense of connection to land when they came to “Australia”. This disconnection led them to plunder the land, treating it as a commodity rather than a living, complex ecosystem that nurtures and is nurtured by First Nations peoples."

Continued thread

Am now into the chapters after Winston was arrested, taken to the Ministry Of Love, & tortured. Some thoughts:

  • it's ages since i last read this book, so many of the finer details had been forgotten. The torture scenes are really harrowing, especially since it's almost like it's my first time again
  • to my surprise i've discovered now that my mangled memory had muddled together this part, with the torture scenes in A Clockwork Orange; weird!
  • reading the brutality of O'Brien demanding Winston submit to his wishes that two plus two only equals four if The Party allows it, or five, three, six, anything else TP demands, was viscerally distressing to me coz with a shock i realised this is exactly what our lamentable govt is doing to us across multiple fronts, but i'll use climate as an example
  • they would have us believe that they are serious about the #ClimateCrisis & #BiodiversityLoss #ExtinctionCrisis whilst persisting with low targets, scam schemes ["carbon offsets", pfffft], ongoing expansion of gas & oil, & subservience to the fossilfools ; gaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
  • as for the despicable RWNJ Oppo, in a farcical instance of life imitating art, they have a literal O'Brien, with his delusional nuclear 2 + 2 = 5 ffs

Deal to protect Australia's native forests blocked amid 'bullying' claims

"Australia has the highest rate of mammalian extinction in the world, it is the only developed nation declared a deforestation hotspot and there are more than 2,200 species listed by the Commonwealth as threatened with extinction. A new deal would have protected what remains of the nation's forests." >>

Anthony Albanese kills last-ditch environmental protection laws with crossbench
"The prime minister has been bullied by the mining and logging lobby again. The Greens want to get laws that would actually provide some protection for nature, but Labor couldn't even entertain protecting forests and critical habitat in an extinction crisis.">>

"In a globally-disgraceful move, Julie Collins, PM Albanese’s new Minister for Forests, has actively helped pull the rug from under a European Union law to stop global deforestation by delaying its implementation another year...Australia has joined an embarrassing global line up of forest, wildlife and climate destroyers in lobbying for this delay and shamelessly welcoming it."

Illegal coal mining in koala habitat?

"A mining company has been accused of destroying koala habitat and illegally mining coal at a site in Queensland, without government approval. About 47 hectares of koala habitat has been cleared near Vitrinite's Vulcan Mine in the Bowen basin, about 150 kilometres south-west of Mackay, to make way for an open cut coal pit."

Wiping out koalas

NSW is working hard to eliminate the marsupial before 2050.
Queensland with even larger population growth rates is also accelerating the demise of the iconic Australian animal. Mainstream media o.s. is concerned:

"They’re spotted close to busy roads, on fences, up power poles, in backyards, near swimming pools, in schools – places they aren’t safe. Some are on the ground, having been hit by cars or attacked by dogs...Koala populations have stabilized in forests outside cities, but not in urban and semi-rural areas due to “human activity and domestic dogs. In the last six years, the RSPCA’s two wildlife hospitals in South East Queensland have treated more than 5,000 diseased and injured koalas...There is nowhere left to 'release' the injured marsupials. They’re frightened. They’re lost. They’re looking for somewhere to live.”

Koala 'habitat':
Expanding suburbs, habitat grab
Bulldozing koala habitat, deforestation
Land clearing for cattle grazing, meat
They turn up in backyards with high metal fence
Mauled by dogs/ pets
Drown in swimming pools
Forced onto busy roads with traffic, fragmented habitat (roadkill)
Encounter power lines

California now has the dubious distinction of being a world leader in its endemic freshwater fishes likely to be driven to extinction 😢

And we know why, as @jarosenfield and Gary Bobker write: "California habitually fails to enforce environmental laws designed to protect our aquatic ecosystems. Following the state’s lead, federal agencies skimp on environmental safeguards and waive the meager protections they do offer any time protecting the public’s fish, wildlife, waterways, and water quality, gets in the way of diverting more water to meet California’s seemingly unquenchable demand."
