On April 27, 2010, a solidarity and mutual aid caravan to the besieged autonomous Triqui community of San Juan Copala left the city of Oaxaca. Along the way, it was ambushed by government-backed paramilitaries belonging to UBISORT (Union for the Social Well-Being of the Triqui Region). Several friends of mine were shot, and Mixtec organizer Bety Cariño and Finnish solidarity activist Jyri Jaakkola were murdered.
One year after the murders, I had the opportunity to accompany Jyri's parents when they visited Oaxaca seeking justice for their son. There is nothing quite like the pain of a parent upon having a child stolen from them.
Today, dozens of people blockaded Federal Highway 190 between Oaxaca and Huajuapan to demand justice for Bety and Jyri. The killers remain protected by the state, and impunity reigns no matter which party is in power.
