#OnThisDay 7th September 1983 a referendum was held to add a "right to life of the unborn" to the Irish Constitution, legally blocking all abortion.

After decades of pro-choice campaigning, the amendment was repealed in 2018.

Here are some documents from the 1983 campaign: https://www.leftarchive.ie/subject/2639/

Five years ago today people in Ireland (& some who travelled #HomeToVote) #repealed the #8th in Ireland.
There was lots of organising for people to get to their polling place (Ireland doesn't make it as easy as some other countries).
The following day I was in a sunny field full of buttercups desperately waiting on updates from the tally people via twitter.
By the time the marriage equality and abortion referendums came I had already lost my Irish vote, but am very proud of how the country voted

#OnThisDay 8th March 2018, an International Women's Day march for choice took place in Dublin calling for the repeal of the eighth amendment. Here are documents distributed at the march: https://www.leftarchive.ie/demonstration/6061/

The eighth amendment was repealed by referendum the following May, removing the block on abortion in Ireland.
