One of the common practices in Finland is that when someone calls, the first thing the recipient do when picking up the phone is to say their name!
There is a scam going on that the scammer autocall phone numbers, wait record the fist few seconds of the call and then the machine hangs up. This way thry at least get four info:
1. This phone number is in use
2. Potential gender
3. Language they speak
4. Their name
Even if you say "hi", you have leaked the first three info.

I've been thinking about this for a while now. Perhaps the best and polite approach would be to simply cough! This would be a bit weird, especially after covid, but every living human being cough, so it is totally natural. The only drawback is if the caller is the insurance company you are trying to buy insurance from
