The last times I've bought an umbrella, I've been greatly disappointed... so I spent years just living without one. After resisting for some time, I decided to get an umbrella for my young son, and -- well I know life is hard for objects handled by kids, but -- it broke in two (at the shaft!!!) after one day of use.

That got me thinking, how hard would it be to make a good umbrella? (short answer: well, it does not seem trivial!)

(I understand that the market forces go in the opposite direction, and also that people tend to lose umbrellas, so there is a strong push for keeping the prices low...)

Here are some challenges:

- a good dozen moving parts
- panel got to resist been folded and stretched (while both dry and wet)
- shaft must be resistant (wind, rain, umbrella been shaken to dry out faster)
- and yet the whole thing shouldn't get too heavy

Any tips about how to build an umbrella? Or suggestions of decent brands? #engineering #umbrella #righttorepair
