@rachelstrohm I appreciate your toots. I really struggle with Mastodon’s #Eurocentrism and lack of news from elsewhere. I used to really enjoy and learn so much from Nigerian twitter; i really miss all that. Just now briefly went in and saw a Twitter space on #Hunger in Nigeria going on right now, and then found countless posts on how bad things are under #Tinubu, real hunger in so many places. Knew far too little about that, too! Trying to find ways to get and share more global news here.

President #Tinubu of #Nigeria has officially requested support from the Nigerian Senate for a military intervention in #Niger.

#Nigeria sends delegation to #Niger to find peaceful solution to crisis

At the direction of President #Tinubu, a Nigerian delegation is en route to Niger to resolve the crisis brewing between the Sahelian state and its #ECOWAS neighbors.

The delegation is led by former military head of state Abdulsalami Abubakar, who ruled the country from 1998 to 1999 following the death of Nigeria's own military coup leader, Sani Abacha.

Abubakar is accompanied by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Abubakar III; heir to the 19th century Sokoto Caliphate which ruled much of Nigeria and Niger, and the spiritual leader of Nigeria's Muslims.

ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray will also join them in Niger's capital, Niamey.

The delegation has been tasked by Tinubu with finding a peaceful resolution to the crisis for the sake of regional peace, and avoiding involvement in foreign geopolitical struggles.

🔴 President Bola #Tinubu, who is at the helm of regional superpower #Nigeria, regards the coup across the border in #Niger as a litmus test for democracy in West #Africa

Having assumed the chairmanship of regional bloc #Ecowas a mere three weeks ago, he was confronted with a major foreign policy challenge when the military seized power in Niger - a strategic ally in the fight against militant Islamists wreaking havoc across much of West Africa and now open to Wagner-ϟϟ

Extortion, displacement, and violence at the hands of #Nigeria’s #police forces and military has helped drive grievances fueling many of the country’s crises. Building trust with citizens will need to be an ongoing priority of the #Tinubu administration if there is to be any significant increase in #security.

@davidnjoku The overall international consensus, in this piece and so many others, seems to be that voter turn out was historically low, elections fair and #Tinubu the rightful winner; the narrative being that #PeterObi did well, but always was the third party. However everyone I know, and so many people on Twitter and elsewhere, including serious analysts, do not really accept the result, saying effectively that many Obi votes were not counted. Struggling to reconcile all this
