Would you pay to have #AI summarize and promote your research? Would you pay to prevent that from happening?

"#SpringerNature…is approaching the authors of papers in its journals with AI-generated "Media Kits" to summarize and promote their research. In an email to journal authors…Springer told the scientists that its AI tool will "maximize the impact" of their research, saying the $49 package will return "high-quality" outputs for marketing and communication purposes…[But] the tool's "high-quality" outputs can't always be trusted. On an accompanying webpage linked in the email, Springer warns that "even the best AI tools make mistakes" and urges authors to painstakingly review the AI's outputs and issue corrections as needed for accuracy and clarity."

New study: "User tracking that would be unthinkable in a physical #library setting now happens routinely through #publisher #platforms."

ZenodoNavigating Risk in Vendor Data Privacy Practices: An Analysis of Springer Nature's SpringerLinkNavigating Risk in Vendor Data Privacy Practices: An Analysis of Springer Nature's SpringerLink documents a variety of practices that undermine library privacy standards. SpringerLink provides a case study in the encroachment of the broader surveillance-based data brokering economy into academic systems. Combined with our 2023 report on Elsevier’s ScienceDirect platform, this analysis illustrates the wide range of privacy risks inherent in the business models and practices in the academic scholarship marketplace. Among other findings, the report documents risks related to the 200 named third parties that are allowed to collect information from users of the site (along with what appear to be additional unlisted companies found only in our public website analysis). While the specific privacy concerns posed by SpringerLink are different, our analysis reiterates the findings from our ScienceDirect report: that user tracking that would be unthinkable in a physical library setting now happens routinely through publisher platforms. While this analysis and recommended actions are grounded in the library context, these findings will raise pressing issues for faculty, administrators, and policymakers to consider as well. The report closes with suggested actions that libraries can take over both the short and long term to address vendor privacy risks.

Heute hatten wir im Rahmen der 🚀 #openscience Reihe von @dipf_aktuell und @leibnizopenscience die spannende Panel Diskussion zu „Perspektiven für die Finanzierung der #openaccess -Transformation in der #eduresearch“. Update. Here's another piece that made it through peer review (#Cureus / #SpringerNature) documenting the real problems of #APCs without mentioning the existence or prevalence of non-APC OA (#DiamondOA) journals.

The editors and peer reviewers also allowed this howler to stand: "The #GreenOA option does not charge an APC and is free for authors to publish but requires a subscription to the journal to read the article."

www.cureus.comIncreasing Importance and Costs Associated With Publishing for Dermatology Residency ApplicantsThe financial costs associated with publishing in academic journals have steadily risen in recent years, reflected by higher publishing fees and the emergence of open access (OA) publishing models. Research remains an essential part of academia and has special significance for residency applicants. Due to recent changes in some objective measures used to rank residency applicants, such as abandoning numerical United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 scores and transitioning pre-clinical grades to Pass/Fail, other objective measures have gained significance: in particular, the quality and quantity of research activities including manuscripts, abstracts, and presentations have become more important in residency applications. This has led to a significant increase in the reported number of research experiences and publications to more competitive specialties, including dermatology. Our study analyzes the current financial landscape of publishing in the field of dermatology and the financial burden placed on applicants as well as programs to meet the expected number of research experiences in order to successfully match into a dermatology residency. Through a comprehensive examination of 85 dermatology-based academic journals, we assess the costs and differences of publishing in OA and hybrid OA journals while also exploring potential avenues for mitigating the financial burden of publishing. Our findings indicate that while cost-effective options exist, the financial burden of article processing charges remains substantial.

2/ Here's the legal complaint.
lieffcabraser.com/pdf/Academic

The plaintiff is Lucina Uddin (@lucinauddin), a professor of psychology at #UCLA.

The six publisher defendants are #Elsevier, #Sage, #SpringerNature, #TaylorAndFrancis, #Wiley, and #WoltersKluwer. Another defendant is the #STM_Association, a publisher trade organization.

There are also 50 individual defendants ("John Does 1 through 50”) whose names will be revealed later.

2024 is the fifth year after the start of the the Journal of Cheminformatics pilot for annotations using the Citation Typing Ontology. The approach is simple, compatible with the Springer Nature platform. SN could have made it fly. The uptake was promising, but not deemed a success. One problem was (even this year) the problematic production phase, where CiTO annotation is caught in many other problems there.
