Douglas E. Welch<p>Librarians are dangerous: A public service announcement by Brad Montague</p><p>Dear Enthusiasts,</p><p>I write to you today as a concerned citizen.
Many aren’t brave enough to say it, but the time has come. So, I will say it:</p><p>Librarians are dangerous.</p><p>(Dramatic music should be playing in your head right now.)</p><p>You thought they were just keepers of the quiet. Guardians of the “shhh.”
The ones who handed you a dusty book and pointed to a beanbag chair.</p><p>Wrong.</p><p>Read More<br><a href="https://welchwrite.com/blog/2025/04/20/librarians-are-dangerous-a-public-service-announcement-by-brad-montague-shared/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">welchwrite.com/blog/2025/04/20</span><span class="invisible">/librarians-are-dangerous-a-public-service-announcement-by-brad-montague-shared/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/library" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>library</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/librarians" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>librarians</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/essay" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>essay</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/life" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>life</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/liberty" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>liberty</span></a> <a href="https://nerdculture.de/tags/shared" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>shared</span></a></p>
Knut 🏳️‍🌈 🇳🇴🧸<p>I'm pretty open about being a <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/librarian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>librarian</span></a> fanboy. They're super heros. They really are. And my librarian she says what they're doing now is using Hoopla for access to some of those titles because Hoopla is a private company that holds their own collection and referring people there. The government can't regulate that and Hoopla sells by access not by title. So it's all or nothing. But they still hide things. I know where they are 😁 <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/library" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>library</span></a> <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/books/2025/apr/14/librarians-in-uk-increasingly-asked-to-remove-books-as-influence-of-us-pressure-groups-spreads" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">theguardian.com/books/2025/apr</span><span class="invisible">/14/librarians-in-uk-increasingly-asked-to-remove-books-as-influence-of-us-pressure-groups-spreads</span></a></p>

EmmiI'll never get tired of Helsinki Central Library Oodi. It was built as a present to people when Finland turned 100 a couple of years ago. It's across from the parliament so the power keepers would not who they work for. It has 3D printers, lazer cutters, sewing machines, instruments, audio and music studios, workspaces, and of course, a ton of books, all free to use and borrow with your library card. It's such a treat, so awesome values (the first picture is from the stairs where they have written who is welcome to Oodi - everyone), great symbolism, and neat things to do. And exceptional architecture!<br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Helsinki?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Helsinki</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/oodi?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#oodi</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/centrallibraryoodi?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#centrallibraryoodi</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/library?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#library</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/libraries?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#libraries</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/Finland?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Finland</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/equality?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#equality</a>

God fredag! Today I am going to take my name change order and go get my name changed on the most important document! My #library card! The librarians will be so excited since they helped print and scan and organize and all that.. being my nice little secretaries and cheerleaders. #books #librarians

Libraries are under assault.

A 🧵 about what authors can do to support them:

I've been touring every local #library in the PGH Carnegie library system and getting my library passport stamped. Then posting about that and telling folks delightful stories about my adventures and encouraging them to *just use the library* because they get funding based on circulation.

We have an intern at my library whose internship is coming to an end this week. Her teacher came today to check how things are. I said something to them they told to tell her. They were right, that it was something important to be told, so I did.

"You are the kind of librarian our society needs."
