#FreePress advocates expressed alarm about the inclusion of #journalists…, as well as the possibility of their communications being released to the public, which goes “considerably well beyond the scope of what…leak investigations in the past have typically focused on,”says Grayson Clary, staff atty at the #Reporters Cmte for #FreedomOfThePress. Rather, the effort seems like “a tactic designed to…make it much harder for journalists to strike up those source relationships in the first instance.”

#Trump #DOJ unveiled a revised #regulation for #leak investigations on Thurs, restoring the ability of federal investigators to use #CourtOrders, #warrants & #subpoenas to go after #reporters’ phone records, notes or testimony.

The move by AG #PamBondi rolls back a #policy from her predecessor, #MerrickGarland, who was appointed by President #Biden, that flatly banned going after reporters’ info in leak investigations.

#Democrats Had a Shot at Protecting #Journalists From Trump.
#Senate Democrats had #legislative path to shield journalists and sources from #surveillance and #subpoenas. They didn’t act.
Long before reelection on promises to punish disfavored #reporters and outlets, #freepress advocates warned that rescinded #DOJ rules were an inadequate shield. Last year, Senate Democrats had a clear opportunity to make basic protections for journalists a matter of binding federal law.

"Some of the most consequential reporting in US history—from Watergate to warrantless wiretapping after 9/11—was & continues to be made possible because #reporters have been able to protect the identities of confidential #sources & uncover & report stories that matter to people across the political spectrum," said Bruce Brown, Reporters Cmte president, an advocacy group for #journalists, in a stmnt.

The #DOJ’s former policy, implemented under AG #MerrickGarland, barred the #Justice Dept from compelling records from #reporters, unless the #journalist was a suspect in a criminal investigation unrelated to newsgathering or they had obtained information through #criminal methods.

#PamBondi said the DOJ will employ “procedural protections” before demanding information from reporters, including giving advance notice to the #journalists & requiring leadership approval in some situations….

The directive reverses a policy the #DOJ implemented during #Democratic President Joe Biden's admin. That barred prosecutors from seizing #reporters’ phone & email records in most circumstances.

The #Biden admin’s policy followed criticism of the DOJ for secretly subpoenaing records on reporters & congressional staff members as prosecutors pursued leaks of *national security* info during #Trump’s first term.

Our #Congress has turned into Internet #trolls.
"In the video, posted early Saturday, Mullin is in the Capitol and recounts how a reporter shot and killed Rep. William Taulbee there in 1890, a year after Taulbee left office. There's a lot we can say about #reporters of the stories they write, but I bet they would write a lot less false stories if we could still handle our differences that way," nbcnews.com/politics/congress/

NBC News · Republican senator floats using violence against journalists who report 'fake news'By Megan Lebowitz

News media really has to stop asking entertainers what they think about world affairs. If they hadn't maybe we wouldn't now be in the mess we're in.

Good on Bill Burr for calling this out as weak and cowardly journalism.

"You need to get your balls back and it's not my job, I'm a dancing clown"

"#Jewish #reporters occupy a unique space. Our #history demands that we chronicle unimaginable horrors, yet the act of bearing witness exacts a heavy toll. This tension is as ancient as our people. Shelomoh bar Shimshon, who chronicled the Rhineland massacres of 1096, asked, “Why did the skies not darken and the stars not dim?” He likened the mass suicides of #Jews facing Crusaders to the binding of Isaac, sacrifices beyond comprehension."

The change announced by Leavitt breaks decades of precedent. The White House Correspondents’ Association, a group representing #journalists who cover the admin, has long determined on its own which #reporters would participate in the pool.

Because presidents often hold events in smaller settings like the Oval Office, where not every reporter who covers #POTUS can fit, the #press pool format has long been used to ensure that journalists accurately record a president’s comments.
