#TUG2024 day 3 starts with the status update by Ondřej Sojka about his work on expanding the #hyphenation patterns across Slavic languages.

They use #MachineLearning to compare existing patterns to find out if they can be used or adapted to other Slavic languages. This work is not only to be used within #TeX / #TeXLaTeX of course and is (or will be) implemented e.g. in browsers or smartphone operating systems.

Just found out how to fix #hyphenation not working in #Scribus on #Fedora #Linux (probably for #languages that aren't system language).

Check that the text frame, character and paragraph styles are all the correct language (in my case German on an English system). If Extras > Hyphenate Text still isn't working, go to Windows > Resources > Hyphenation Dictionaries and check that you have the correct .dics installed (for me it was only English).

Tadaa 🎉

And Firefox doesn't hyphenate ALL-CAPS words in any language, but this is clearly a bug.

Yesterday I looked at three Dutch hyphenation rules lists, and I even called a Dutch language help line I didn't know existed, but it is categorically allowed in Dutch, and Firefox is doing it wrong. I suspect the same is true for German and French.

Interesting. My Edge/Windows does not have a Dutch dictionary, while Chrome on the same system does. So dictionaries are now proven to be applied on a per-browser basis, and not a per-system one.

Also, why does a Dutch-language Edge lack the Dutch dictionary?

On 7th of February 2023, I will give a talk [0] on digital typesetting here in . I don't think there is going to be a recording, but I will share the slides at this URL [1].

I will focus on a requirement analysis, discuss existing solutions and will present my own software project . If you are interested, join me!
