A quotation from Bierce

PATRIOTISM, n. Combustible rubbish ready to the torch of any one ambitious to illuminate his name. In Dr. Johnson’s famous dictionary patriotism is defined as the last resort of a scoundrel. With all due respect to an enlightened but inferior lexicographer I beg to submit that it is the first.

Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914?) American writer and journalist
“Patriotism,” The Devil’s Dictionary (1911)

What you described, @shaulawalko, is like a dancer having to audition before being accepted into The Juilliard School. To make her more comfortable, she asked her boyfriend to join her in that audition, and to her surprise, Juilliard accepted him but not her. This was part of the plot of the movie #Fame. #TheWestWing is in the same tradition, with Martin Sheen suddenly emerging as the star of that television series.

The TikTok Trolley

You're walking down the street, minding your own business, when suddenly you spot a runaway TikTok fame-grabber careening down the hill towards a crossroads. In one direction, there's a group of influencers who have been faking their perfect lives. If the fame-hungry runner plows into them, they'll finally have some genuine content. In the other direction, there's a peaceful neighborhood full of normal people who don't know that the internet exists yet. If the runner hits them, they'll be sucked into the vortex of viral trends and celebrity culture.

  • Pull the lever, redirecting the TikTok hurricane towards the influencer pack. Their dramatic "oops" moments will finally be authentic, and the 'Gram will be popping with real #Fail moments.
  • Don't pull the lever, and let the runner collide with the innocent bystanders. They'll be thrown into a world of filters, challenges, and sponsored posts, forever wondering what happened to their quiet lives.

What person valuing themselves and those close to them, would want to worship such idols?

Better to be just an ordinary person, talking with and listening to another ordinary person.

Big Dreams for 'The Littlest Hobo': Fans push for star on Canada’s Walk of Fame
When Terry Bush co-wrote and sang Maybe Tomorrow, the theme song for The Littlest Hobo, he thought it was just another gig—a catchy tune for a TV show about a wandering German Shepherd. Forty-five years later, that 'little tune' still tugs at heartstrings, pops up on playlists, and has even been ...
