@RATPAC presentation/Q&A for tonight: Expect the Unimaginable w/ Greg Hauser, W3FIE, Statewide #Interoperability Coordinator (SWIC) and Communications Branch Manager for the #NC Department of Public Safety Division of #Emergency Management

This is a presentation on the #HurricaneHelene response in NC and what we learned about communications and #AuxComm

The #Reticulum Network World #Map Project went live today:

https://rmap.world/index.php

I'd like to see some #EMCOMM minded #hamradio sites show up on this map. In theory #EOC client computers running reticulum-meshchat day-to-day would have transparent fallback to RF-based connectivity when their commercial TCP network goes away in a #disaster event.

I'm down with the raison d'être of Winter Field Day: "Ham radio operators should practice portable emergency communications in winter environments as the potential for freezing temperatures, snow, ice, and other hazards present unique operational concerns. WFD [helps to] increase your level of preparedness for disasters and improve your operational skills in subpar conditions."

The #HamChallenge this week: Do a contest.

As a new ham, it's hard to imagine ever taking contests that seriously. I like that more people are on the air. I dislike communication as competition.

Nevertheless I had fun doing my first not-a-contest: Winter Field Day 2025!

I did all 8 highly contrived QSOs on VHF/UHF. I (unsuccessfully) activated a POTA spot and hunted (a successful) POTA activation.

@wb2ifs If you published your piece, I would like to read it. These are things I'm thinking about, too, as a new ham operator looking to help with #emcomm. I'd have to put $300-400 into the UHF/VHF equipment required just to volunteer in my local 'public service' organization, and that doesn't even get me into HF.

I hope there are some interesting examples of club/school/collective ownership of radio equipment which have provided affordable alternatives.

@wdlindsy too many #trumpers in my local #hamRadio clubs for me to see them as #safeplaces. #ARES #RACES particularly so. (#CERT, not so much because it largely led by #blackwomen & run by #FEMA). How would they respond to communications #emergenies in 75% #AfricanAmerican #princegeorgescounty? I began to lose interest in local #emcomm years ago when "teammates" indicated that they wouldn't #volunteer in #sketchyneighborhoods 🙄. #america is #sketchyneighborhood for #blackfolks.🤔 #blackmastodon

Farpoint Farms (Erik) on YouTube makes a good case for why we all might want to consider owning an old-fashioned analog #scanner for use during emergencies - even if most of the comms around you have moved over to digital ~ #EMCOMM #Helene #DisasterCommunication #Hurricane2024 #HamRadio #AmateurRadio ~ youtu.be/BX7EH708Jd0?si=jZDKYI

Note from me: No, Shane. Our government is *not* failing us miserably, and certainly not with the current situations. ANYWAY, otherwise good and thoughtful commentary here.
