Blocks DC on the shield and thus the RF noise (and your own transmissions—ouch!) that’d otherwise get picked up by the field around it. At the antenna feed point, prevents using the shield as a counterpoise. Further down, trims that counterpoise. At the shack wall, said to prevent RF from “entering the shack”… but now I think about it, I’m not 100% on why the position would matter for that? Nor, why I’ve been told to put one at both ends? #HamRadio

Neil E. Hodges
I don't think the big sleeve balun I've been using is working so great, what with all of the radio waves bouncing around and off the stucco walls of my balcony. Owen Mehegan
Week 17 of the #hamradio #hamchallenge (HC17S) is to find the repeater closes to you. Technically, the one closest to me is VK3RDQ, but I can't hear it from my location. This is perhaps not surprising, as it is only 68m elevation. The next closest is probably VK3RML or VK3RMS. I can hear their IDs from here with my HT. However, like in many places these days, there is very little activity on any of these repeaters. There are at least seven which are probably reachable from the metro Melbourne area, and they're all idle 99% of the time. It really seems like the community would be better served by consolidating onto one or two systems.

@hamchallenge

Michael K Johnson
Tonight I made a "capacity hat" for my ultra-portable Elecraft AX1 HF #HamRadio antenna.

I found a video by LY2H Linas where he made one based on an alligator clip to make the same antenna resonant on 20m to use with an IC-705. I remembered that I had a box of those clips and got to work.

First I cut off the wire connection from the back (to make it more compact) and filed off the sharp edges.

Then I cut 2 x 245mm pieces of 14AWG solid copper wire, and cut the middle ~15mm of insulation off of each of them. I used a soldering gun to have enough power, and soldered each wire to the back of one side of the remaining clip. Then I bent the wires out into an X.
