look we all know the cute little saying about debugging but i'm actually fairly certain the API for UICollectionView is the murderer

I just added a colorful feature to my free NYC buildings app: a kind of noiseometer! Each building has one of 10 colors, according to how many 311 Noise complaints were submitted in the last 12 months. There’s also a setting for Heat/Hot Water complaints.

My thought is that this might be useful for someone looking to move in the five boroughs. In any case, this update gives the app some much-needed color!

did *anyone* know this was a thing? the animation the Photos app does when deleting an item is just…a built-in, standard UIKit animation https://developer.apple.com/documentation/uikit/uiview/systemanimation

I'm trying to detect the tap location on a #SwiftUI Map.

If I add an onTapGesture, it works but I lose the "double tap to zoom" native behaviour

Anyone knows a way to not override this default gesture? I would ideally prefer not having to use an UIViewRepresentable if possible.

I am having all kinds of problems with UITextView dropping custom attributes from typingAttributes when any automated insertions occur (auto complete/correct/etc..)

Ugh, using #TipKit on UIKit is a painful & buggy experience

It's quite obvious that this framework was made for #SwiftUI, and #UIKit was an afterthought

30 seconds into a #SwiftUI app and the toolbar divider does not disappear when completely scrolled to the top like any other #AppKit or even #UIKit #Catalyst app. God, have mercy. So frustrating that I have to lose out on all the SwiftUI goodies just because the damn framework can't even get the basics right.

SwiftUI experts: How do you debug a feature that uses SwiftUI?

In UIKit I print the current view controller and with lldb I can manipulate the views to figure out what the problem is. This seems not to work in SwiftUI. How do you find the line of code that is problematic to fix an issue?

I saw an article recently that showed how you could correctly set the selection style in #UIKit #Catalyst to the way AppKit does it instead of the accent color. Something with selection prominence. Can't find the article nor the API for that any more. Anyone knows?

It's 2024 and #UIKit and #Catalyst still insist on translating the view controller title to the window's subtitle and make the main title... the app's name? Why? Is there a non-hacky way to not do this?

Apple recently became too aggressive with deprecating stuff

I think deprecated flag should be the last resort - for symbols that are really will be removed soon. Or when some direct replacement exists.

Meanwhile they add it for perfectly functional, decades old, core pieces of APIs, just because they introduced a different way of handling stuff. Different - means there is no easy direct migration - a big refactor would be often needed.

I can’t believe SwiftUI turned 5 this year, yet I still had to use a UIKit view just to capture a photo with the camera. On a device Apple focuses on most with every new iPhone iteration, this feels ironic.
