lj games club – MDickie and Comedy Games

Muzej sodobne umetnosti Metelkova, Tuesday, May 13 at 06:00 PM GMT+2

MDickie and Comedy Games

At our next Ljubljana Games Club meeting, taking place on May 13th, we’ll be discussing three of the latest games by solo developer MDickie (Matt Dickie): Wrestling Empire (2021), Old School (2023), and Hard Time III (2024). MDickie’s games have gained popularity among streamers and YouTubers thanks to their bizarre, amateurish aesthetics, janky wrestling mechanics, and chaotic sandbox design. While these games are rarely considered “good” by conventional standards, they succeed in creating emergent comedic narratives that portray the interpersonal drama, violence, and absurdity of the wrestling world (Wrestling Empire), the education system (Old School), and prison life (Hard Time III).

We’ll analyze MDickie’s work as an example of “comedy games” and explore how games can function as vehicles for humor more broadly. To prepare, aim to spend 30–60 minutes with each of the three games.

If you’re short on time, I would recommend trying Wrestling Empire, as it’s widely considered the best of the trio and offers a strong sense of MDickie’s overall approach. You can find all three games on Steam:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/2529120/Old_School/

They are also available on the Nintendo Switch:

Premnoga orožja Sudana: vojna med sudansko vojsko in Silami za hitro posredovanje - Neva Accetto Vranac // sklop predavanj IDŠ

PLAC, Linhartova 43, Wednesday, April 16 at 06:00 PM GMT+2

Predavanje bo v običajnem terminu – v sredo 16. aprila ob 18h v PLAC-u.

Iskrice življenja v Gazi s Haneen Karaz : Sparks of life in Gaza with Haneen Karaz

A-Infoshop, Friday, April 11 at 07:00 PM GMT+2

Iskrice življenja v Gazi s Haneen Karaz

Vabljene_i , v petek 11.4. ob 19:00 v [a]-infoshop!

Sparks of life in Gaza with Haneen Karaz

Decades of occupation, violence, war and oppression by the State of Israel in Palestine have subjected the local population to unbearable conditions of life and, for many, to premature death. Yet, despite all the suffering and horrors, the Palestinian people also serve as an example of incredible resilience, of persistent resistance; of resistance against a militarily and technologically much stronger enemy. In the light of the genocidal war in Gaza, resistance is survival itself. But despite the deprivation of basic goods such as water, food, safe shelter and medical care, we are witnessing incredible stories not only of bare survival but also of creative community life in solidarity, where even in these times there is room for love, laughter and joy. Our guest Haneen Karaz will talk about life in Gaza in current conditions. She is an artist who, even in this times, is organising creative animation workshops for children in the community. We will talk about maintaining mental well-being in times of crisis.

Palestinians should not be a source of pity, but a model of strength and will to fight, live and stand proud in the face of decades of brutal oppression and continuos Israeli violence and murders. We must do everything in our power to support them, while at the same time following their example in our struggles against our oppressors.

Welcome to join us, on Friday 11.4. at 19:00 in [a]-infoshop!

Replied in thread

The last part of the book Talk: The Science of Conversation and the Art of Being Ourselves discusses conversations between people who may not agree. Other books have tackled this subject at length, so I won’t rehash the ideas here.

While some of the ideas in the book aren’t new (to me), I think they could be applied to collective benefit, both in person and on social media. Less one-upmanship, fewer “gotcha” questions, less correction, less ego. More question asking, more connection, and more kindness, most of all.

🧵 end

I finished the book Talk: The Science of Conversation and the Art of Being Ourselves by Alison Wood Brooks. I love the topic about how to communicate well with other people – it’s an art that we can cultivate to our own and others’ benefit. It’s beautiful, healthy, and connective, and I was happy to have this book become available.

This is a long thread with my notes and direct quotes.

The book begins by identifying maxims that can be used to facilitate conversation, which I think are useful both offline and on: “The TALK maxims break conversation down into four crucial reminders that will guide our entire approach to make conversation more vibrant, enriching, and effective: Topics, because great conversationalists choose good topics and make any topic better; Asking, because asking questions helps us move between topics and dive deeper into them; Levity, to keep our conversations from becoming stale; and Kindness, because great talkers care for others and show it.”

It's an easy reminder – to stay curious, to introduce lightness, and to lead with compassion.
