From OPB:
The article cites $129m in funds held by #DHS and Secretary Noem, but it is really a lot higher because obligations are held up as well, not just the request for funds. The total is closer to $200m at this point...
Wake up to find Heathrow Airport closed due to fire at an electrical substation.
*Puts Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity hat on*
Call me old fashioned but I'd have thought the biggest airport in the UK would have had multiple redundant power supplies.
It will be interesting to see what the ongoing investigation finds.
From paradise to peril
Vanuatu has been in a perpetual state of recovery.
How many disasters can one nation take?
Today we did a Disaster Recovery (DR) test. There were a couple of bumps in the road, but we got through it.
It's the right thing to do. So, yay for us.
If you take any sort of backups (SQL Server databases or otherwise), test those restores!
People hoot & holler about this all the time, and for good reason.
And the hits just keep on coming...
The database backup restored from the third party backup tool is corrupt. As of now, we have lost data.
Pro tip: when a database administrator tells you to let them be in charge of backup & restore, do not argue with them.

MAGA screamed hysterically every single day that FEMA wasn't helping Hurricane Helene victims. The Trump administration defiantly and publicly turns off the tap and nothing.
Georgia leaders respond to Helene extension denial
"Georgia leaders sent a letter to President Donald Trump after the state was denied an extension on the federal share for debris removal post Helene."

Mike Carlton is no fool. Anything but. Still, I can't believe how many super-smart people are still utter computer novices, when the modern PC has been with us since the 1970s' Apple II.
Nor - despite an often total dependence on the contents of that tiny cheap storage device inside their PC - do they seem to have encountered the term "disaster recovery."
A single copy of a book one's writing? Even in the typewriter age, authors used carbon paper.
Ye gods. My work is totally insignificant, and I'm not dependent on any of it.
Nevertheless, for the pure satisfaction of the exercise, I run duplicate hard drives mirrored weekly - not real time. Routinely backup to an 'offline always' anti-ransomware archive. And feed real-time to a double-encrypted cloud drive. The chain is both cumulative and in timed stages. Newer doesn't instantly overwrite older.
I would like to use “proxmox backup client” to backup a physical hosts to a drac-bootable iso-image. It would be best if this backup is created online without a shutdown. Is this even possible? #Backup #DisasterRecovery

Notes from Swannanoa - Part V ~ As I write this, it has been 122 days since Helene. In another week or so, I anticipate the appearance of purple dead nettle all around the land surrounding Bear Path Cottage, a bit of bright color among the browns and greens of winter.

Tragedy on the Potomac: Blackhawk military helicopter collides midair with regional American Airlines flight
Dozens of people may be dead after a nighttime aviation disaster in the skies above Washington National Airport (DCA), the closest airport to America's seat of government.
Now the race: Threw my laundry in the wash, recharging everything in here... while the AQI is good and no wind, and power, LOL. Plus, with 8% humidity, line drying will be near instant LOL. #DisasterRecovery
#oregon is introducing at least four #DisasterRecovery bills this legislative session. They cover some interesting topics like a State Disaster Fund in place if #FEMA can't/won't provide federal aid for disasters. Or matching grants to cover the costs of what they won't cover already.
I'll share links to the bills if people are interested.
Hullo planners. Want to work for Parks Canada, and help with rebuilding the town of Jasper, post wildfire? This is an urbanist's dream community: a town designed to be a 15-minute community, no greenfield development possible, frequent use of bicycles as commuting vehicles, near universal embrasure of wildlife as neighbours, firesmart-savvy, cosmopolitan expectations, green.
Deadline to apply: Feb 12'25.

Right wing radicals see the devastating fires in Los Angeles as a tragedy they can exploit to spread their anti-science agenda
The response to a California disaster has been to depict California as a disaster, NPI contributor Joel Connelly writes. The right’s propaganda apparatus depicts a land of homeless encampments, street crime, addicts and dangerous immigrants.
