One of the stories that might get lost in the results of #elxn45 that deserves to be highlighted is the fact that the wingnut rightwing “People's Party of Canada" almost completely disappeared.

It only came into existence after the split in the CPC party in 2019. The leader, Maxime Bernier didn't win his seat then, nor in 2021 even though the PPC received 840,000 votes and 4.94% last time.

This election, the PPC is currently at 139,227 and 0.7% of the vote. Clearly those 700,000 voters have gone back to the Conservatives.

The right united itself and would have prevailed were it not for Donald Trump putting the fear of annexation into the hearts of centre-left leaning voters.

enr.elections.caElection Night Results - NationalGeneral election results in Canada. Number of seats per political party.

See here's the thing. My father remembered WW2 when the fash took over Germany. He was too young to serve but lots of people of my generation had parents who did. My generation learned how fucking bad fascists are and we learned it hard. How the hell did we not teach our children how bad fascism is? We can do better Canada. Please do better. Housing, not extra power to cops to tear up tent camps, more green jobs not more gas or oil. *sigh*

I mean, I’m super happy that he’s lost his electoral seat, but I *just* figured out how to remember the spelling of his name:

“Poil” which means ‘hair’

plus

“Lievre” which means ‘hare’

(But no double L, because the middle of his name spells “I lie”)

Continued thread

While it is too early for an Order of Canada,

And beyond his purview,

OoC's are the Governor-General's gig,

During last night's Victory Speech,

The ONLY MP-Elect our Prime Minister name-dropped was...

"Yes, Bruce Fanjoy.

"I’m looking forward to working with Bruce Fanjoy.

"Fantastic.

"He will be a great MP.

"We’re gonna have fun today, yes.

"We’re gonna have fun."

You know what'd be really funny?

Making Fanjoy a Minister.

This was a pretty astonishing election. Just a few months ago, it was a certain conservative landslide majority, and now Poilievre is unemployed. It swung on two things: first was Trudeau understanding that he needed to step down. The second, of course, was Trump’s betrayal of our long alliance and his threats of annexation. Poilievre, who had been using Trump’s slogans and language almost word-for-word for years, couldn’t separate himself in time. It was enough, as one commenter said, to scare NDP supporters into voting for a Bay Street banker.

The Liberals understood when it was time for their unpopular leader to step down, but I wonder if the Conservatives will learn the lesson? I really think that they might have won this election, with any other leader.

That was some election night, and definitely mixed feelings about it. Considering what things looked like in December this a a huge win. But it came in large part at the expense of the NDP, which is a loss. The CPC got their largest percentage of popular vote since 1988, which is disturbing. But PP lost his own seat and we no longer have to see him use the House of Commons as a personal stage for his braying and sloganeering.

Canada has a lot of work to do.

Waking up to mostly final results of the Canadian Federal Election.

It’s worse than I’d hoped, but better than I’d feared. Generally uncomfortable though.

Uncomfortably strong showing by the CONs.

Uncomfortably tenuous win by the LIBs.

And no NDP party status.
