Joe's Barber Shop

Some barber shops seem to be the center of town. Joe's is actually much newer than many of the barber shops I see in small towns. But this is very fitting for the feel that I was trying to get.
The red, white, and blue barber pole on the outside, the red leather chairs on the inside, old bottles of elixirs and what not set up on the shelf. This is my kind of place.

Joe's Barber Shop This is an image of Joe's Barber shop located in downtown Vacaville, Ca. I was looking for a nostalgic look as walked through town that night. I think this fit well and I added some selective coloring to get the mood I was looking for. The foreground has a city bench facing the front of the barber shop. The exterior of the shop looks like it was built in the late 50's or maybe the early 60's. The front is made of a beige colored stucco look with big windows that let us look in to the old style shop. Below the windows are a couple of red panels. Inside the shop you can see everything you would think you would find in an old shop.

Mix Canyon Creek

This is a small waterfall half way up Mix Canyon off of Pleasant Valley Road in Solano County. Not an easy shot to get as there are very few places to set up along a narrow dirt road.
This was the first images I ever entered into a photography contest. This image took first place in the color landscape category. Came in second for best of show.

Mix Canyon Creek This is an image of a creek up in Mix Canyon up in the hills that border Vacaville on the west. This seasonal waterfall flows fairly strong in the winter and spring. It tapers off as the summer sets in and the rains stop. At the top of the image there is a broken oak tree with a large limb reaching over the creek. The water flows down below the oak and over several large rocks and into a couple of small pools. The land on both sides of the creek is very rugged with large rocks and boulders mixed in with some trees and bushes struggling to hang on to the steep landscape. I used a slow shutter on this image to give the water a nice silky look.

Vaca Barn

I captured this Vacaville barn many years ago and found it as I did a review of some of my older work.
I reworked the image as a fire was burning in the hills shown behind the barn. Fortunately the fire never came close to the barn and it remains standing to this day.
The sun is setting behind the hills throwing off a nice warm orange glow.

Vaca Barn This is an image of an old weathered barn in rural Vacaville, California. The foreground shows a freshly cut field of hay that has yet to been bailed and stored. The barn is completely weathered looking with decaying boards that are stripped of any paint that was once on them. The tin roof has many rust spots on it but the structure itself seems to still have structural integrity. Behind the barn is a large oak tree backed by the Solano hills. The sun has set over the hills and the sky has an orangish tint to it.

Pena Adobe

This is one of my local haunts so to speak. Pena Adobe is a Vacaville City Park that is on the edge of town, a few miles from where I live.
I hike this area on a regular basis but I rarely photograph it as perhaps it is too familiar to me and I don't always see the beauty that is in my own backyard.
On tis morning I took my camera as the light had a strange quality to it.

Pena Adobe This is an image of a park that is near to my home in Vacaville, California called Pena Adobe. The name is in honor of the first Hispanic family that settled this area. This image is somewhat of a natural abstract. The foreground, background, and subject are all the same. The beautiful rolling hills that make up a good portion of the park. The image was captured early in the day when the sun was at a low angle leaving long shadows in the folds of the earth.

View From Pena Adobe

This is one of my local haunts so to speak. Pena Adobe is a Vacaville City Park that is on the edge of town a few miles from where I live. This is a view from the park looking out over private land.
I hike this area on a regular basis but I rarely photograph it as perhaps it is too familiar. Houses are slated to be built in the valley this year.

View From Pena Adobe This is an image captured from near the top of Pena Adobe park located in Vacaville, California. The view is will be gone forever as the valley floor is slated for over 600 homes. The grass in this area only receives rain during the winter months giving way to the golden colors of the hills. The foreground of the image is the valley floor. You can see a private road starting from the left corner towards the center of the image. The hills were created by the history of earthquakes over the thousands and millions of years. Behind these hills is the larger Mt. Vaca.
