It has to be said, and I haven't seen it in the discussion yet: The mess resulting from #Trove revoking @wragge 's API keys was only possible because they require keys in the first case.
There are reasonable use cases. But more often than not, requiring API keys is all about keeping some form of control. If that's control over published, supposedly open data of institutions supposedly working for open discourse, that control is either meaningless or counterproductive.
I've written a new blog post on the #Trove API keys debacle that answers some questions raised by my first two posts, and provides some updates on recent actions by the National Library of Australia. https://updates.timsherratt.org/2025/04/11/update-on-trove-data-access.html Please share!
If you're a #Trove API user who has received an email from Trove's 'Community Liaison Team' asking you to confirm acceptance of the API terms of use, you might want to read this for background: https://updates.timsherratt.org/2025/03/02/trove-api-users-beware-the.html
The email doesn't actually explain what has changed in the terms of use. In particular it doesn't explain that downloading digitised newspaper text from the API is a breach of the terms of use and requires an individual exemption. I'm working on a new post with more details. #histodons #GLAM #digitalHumanities
It seems that folks who contacted the Director General of the National Library about my #Trove API access are getting responses (or in fact the same response). It's mostly corporate waffle of course, but there's a couple of interesting points.
1. The NLA has a brand new Artificial Intelligence framework at https://www.library.gov.au/visit/about-us/corporate-information/corporate-strategies/artificial-intelligence-framework
2. They are making the process for getting exemptions from the terms of use 'more transparent' (ie making it up) & will be 'reaching out' to API users in coming weeks.
It's almost as if acting without warning to cancel API keys based on a new interpretation of the terms of use that you haven't actually told anyone about is not the best way to communicate with users...

I've added another 15 entries to my list of publications that mention the #GLAMWorkbench or one of its related tools (such as the #Trove Newspaper Harvester). That makes an even 100 references from around the world. https://glam-workbench.net/citations/ #GLAM #collectionsAsData #researchImpact
My battle with the National Library of Australia over access to the #Trove API has been used as a case study in a paper on digital archives as infrastructure by @LeuLeu & @macgraveur. It was presented yesterday at the forum de l’Association des archivistes Français. https://aldonzel.github.io/intervention-forum-AAF25/ (in French) #GLAM
Many thanks to the Australian Historical Association for sharing their concerns about changes to the National Library of Australia's API policy and the suspension of my API keys which, they say, "marks a troubling restriction to the work of researchers in Australia and overseas". https://theaha.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/AHA-Statement-on-New-Restrictions-to-Trove.pdf #Trove #histodons @histodons #GLAM
Nope, now it's not so easy because the gatekeepers at the NLA want you to seek permission before downloading the content of newspaper articles via the API. The #Trove Newspaper and Gazette Harvester is widely used and cited in research literature, but I can't use or maintain it because my API keys were cancelled. The NLA's policy is damaging research.

It's been four weeks now since the National Library of Australia suspended my API keys, forcing all my work on #Trove to stop: https://updates.timsherratt.org/2025/02/24/years-of-work-on-trove.html #GLAM #openGLAM #histodons #digitalHumanities

The NLA's suspension of my #Trove API access has been picked up in this news story from the Australian Computing Society: https://ia.acs.org.au/article/2025/national-library-cracks-down-on-public-data-access.html #GLAM #OpenData

Trove API users beware! I had a meeting with the NLA on Friday about my cancelled API keys and was shocked by changes in their policy towards API use that could have a big impact of HASS research using #Trove data. What a surprise, can't sleep. Thinking about the next blog post I'm going to write about this whole #Trove saga...
@secretgeek @wragge It does sound to me like cover (a shield) for wanting to teach Tim a lesson for some perceived slight. For doing stuff they can’t. For criticism of their spaghetti API. For posting about #TroveAU other than on Twitter. Or any number of petty grievances they may have. #Trove risk losing their greatest champion of all time. And they deserve that.
