UK’s #SmartMeter targets leaves #energy users short-changed says Martin Lewis

I’d suggest shifting firms’ targets from smart meter installations to overall number of working #SmartMeters, incentivize firms to both installations & repairs

4m smart meters are malfunctioning in UK

Repairs are slow, if they happen at all. Resources focused on installs, consumers are frustrated, at risk of misbilling & further problems

The Guardian · UK’s smart meter targets leaving energy users short-changed, says Martin LewisBy Anna Tims

For #decades #electricity #meters just worked. #Power usage either wasn't an issue because it was affordable or you had no trouble working it out. The #electricitymeters rarely needed replacement. Now I concede that as we now have so many #HMOs #smartmeters may be useful for some & emailing a number too onerous for others. But unlike the previous methods these 'smart' ones need paying for, updating, replacing & acceptance that your #data 'may' be shared.

#SmartMeters "We need to be careful that the move to smart tariffs does not exacerbate existing social inequalities. There is a danger that smart tariffs will most benefit high-income customers, those homeowners with the disposable income required to invest in energy technologies such as electric vehicles and solar PV." rte.ie/brainstorm/2024/0424/13

RTÉ · Are smart meters providing any benefits to electricity customers?By Barry Hayes

The point of #SmartMeters for electricity, is to allow the power company to shift the “peak" charge time to whenever you use electricity. If you shift your usage, you can bet the peak charge period will follow you. Also, get ready for #EV charging to attract a surcharge, as Smart Meters allow energy providers to apply differenital tariffs, based on purpose and voltage.

I’m looking for Water, Gas, and Electricity Meters for a customer.

Requirements:
- WiFi connectivity
- MQTT support
- Ease of installation and initial configuration
- Possibility to remotely cut off the water/gas/electricity supply

Can you recommend any out-of-the-box solution? I appreciate your suggestions!

#Smartmeters do what?
" the smart metering programme is expected to save Britain
about £6 billion by 2034". Just who is this #Britain they speak of?
They #save the #energycompany & #shareholders #money as they reduce the need for #meter readers & #callcentres. That #saving is never going to be seen by us! If some people are happy sharing detailed #data including when they're #home, that's up to them. I'll stick to entering the reading online. It's easy to do. #electricity #privacy #bullying

We won't be accepting smart meters until they provide more data to us for zero cost than the current analogue meter. By more data I mean the metered power consumed at each point, sockets, and for each circuit per second.

Until then I'll read the meter once a month and post the readings.

There is no consumer reason for having smart meters.

Energy "#DemandManagement" finally arrives.

"The deal will be available to customers signed with the company's energy plan for homes running only on electricity who have #SmartMeters installed. Users also need to register with the company's energy-saving "Kyuden Eco" app once a flash sale is announced the day prior. During the sale's designated hours, users will accumulate points on the PayPay e-payment app matching their energy usage."

Impacts of smart metering roll-out on household energy use

A meta review of studies by energy suppliers shows reduction of about 3% electricity and 2.5% gas.

The other observation to make here is that suppliers aren't very good at this type of analysis. So maybe needs to be done independently.

I'm thinking of getting in touch with my energy provider to ask them why they haven't tried to bully me into getting a smart meter for a while. It's been weeks now without an email or letter, not even so much as a passive aggressive text. I'm starting to get lonely.
