On #ThisDayInHistory in 1998 the #GoodFridayAgreement ended the thirty years of #TheTroubles. But devolved or not, a #colonial power still governs a large part of #Ireland, and an artificial #border still divides families.

The first performance of Seán O'Casey's the Plough and the Stars took place at the Abbey theatre on 8 February 1926. The play was well received on its opening night. But on subsequent nights audience unrest began and on 11 February Cumann na mBan and Sinn Féin members rioted at perceived insults to the men who had died during the Rising.
Today in Labor History January 21, 1919: A revolutionary Irish parliament formed and declared its independence from the UK. The Irish republican party Sinn Féin won a landslide victory in Ireland in the December 1918 UK Parliamentary elections. Their MPs refused to take their seats and founded a separate parliament in Dublin called Dáil Éireann. They ratified the Proclamation of the Irish Republic that they issued in the 1916 Easter Rising and adopted a provisional constitution.

I support the subsequent investigation that #SinnFein's TD John Brady demands. However, our shameful lack of investment in water infrastructure is partly due to his party's historic opposition to water charges.
Actions have consequences.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1918, women voted for the first time in a UK general election. Christabel #Pankhurst, daughter of Emmeline, sister of Sylvia, a veteran of the #suffrage movement, narrowly lost her race for a seat in Parliament. And in Ireland, women helped #SinnFéin win.
On 14th December 1918 the election in Ireland saw Sinn Féin win 73 of the 105 seats contested in the general election in Ireland. Constance Markievicz, then imprisoned in Holloway Prison in England, was the first woman elected to Westminster. Sinn Féin refused to take up their seats in Westminster.
