In the dialogue 'Phaedrus,' Socrates lays out his objections to writing through a myth about the Egyptian god Thoth, the inventor of writing. 
According to Socrates, writing would:
1.
Weaken Memory: Socrates feared that reliance on written texts would cause people to neglect their memory, making them forgetful and dependent on external records rather than internal recollection. 
2.
Lead to Superficial Understanding: He argued that written words could not engage in dialogue or clarify their meanings. Readers might misunderstand the text, leading to shallow or incorrect interpretations. 
3.
Depersonalize Communication: Socrates believed that writing could not replicate the dynamic, interactive nature of oral conversation, which allowed for immediate feedback and deeper, more nuanced understanding.
