One of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco at the moment is Yemeni Kabab & Mediterranean near Market & Taylor.

The traditional haneeth, kabsa and mandi plates are excellent. The mezzes are fantastic. They have very affordable lunch plates too, and I love the tea they offer. One of those small homey places with seriously good food and vibes.

It’s much better than restaurants in that category that cost 2x more.

Not many people know this, but San Francisco is home to a large Yemeni diaspora, especially around the Tenderloin / Nob Hill area. That's why we have so many good Yemeni coffee and cake places (Delah Coffee, Haraz). Most of the grocers are also run by the community.

A newish restaurant just opened. 'Yemeni kabab & Mediterranean' . Really excellent. Some of the best falafel I've had anywhere in this city. Everything is good really. I've been really wanting this style of food (different from regular Mediterranean' as it uses more spices) so I am happy it opened. I hope it does well. Try any of the haneeth and kabsas. I love well flavored rice like that.

Very affordable lunch sets.

My favorite bánh mì in SF right now is at Bo&Beurre, kitty corner across from Saigon Sandwich (which is fine, but B&B just has far better ingredients and flavor). It’s also almost 2x the price of Saigon. But I am fine paying that coz I like it 3x more.

One day (soon) I will write a list of all the bánh mì stores in the Tenderloin and what to get from each.

I’m always fond of Hai Di Lao when there’s one near me but the Bay Area is so far behind on good modern Chinese chain food that this article (while great) feels like being breathlessly excited about the McDonalds of expensive and fancy hotpot

Another data point for my theory that every major Chinese and Taiwanese food biz chain opens only in Fremont, Cupertino and LA. SF is completely irrelevant in this biz.
