I think I'm hitting the limits on the practical usefulness of #chatGPT for my project. It's really cool that it can mostly understand what I'm trying to do, but it bullshits formulas and algorithms sometimes. Like, if I have to write out the explicit formulas and then all it does is solve the quadratics and not even put it back in the code, it's not saving me any time. I can solve quadratics myself, and I wasted a lot of time deciphering the nonsense solution it gave when I didn't explicitly tell exactly how to do it. I do enjoy talking to it though because the people around me understand far less of what I say than this bot, and that's lonely. It probably doesn't hurt that it's sycophantic, constantly telling me my ideas are fascinating and how clever and right I am.

I know I give #ai and #vibecoding alot of shit. And it's all warranted. When I try and use it with languages I know well, it's a mess.

But when I'm doing something in a language I know nothing about, I'm none the wiser.

In a pretty short amount of time, I was able to get a rust based GTK GUI app up and running with cursor AI to run updates with a log.

But I actually don't know #rustlang at all!

Not saying that's good. But it IS interesting.

This fiscal year I delivered approximately 50 #github #githubcopilot workshops and classroom trainings to more than 2000 participants.

Being a #software #developer for more than 20 years I am very honest in these workshops & also criticize todays marketing and hype about AI supported #development & #vibecoding

Nevertheless it’s another tool in my box and I don’t want to miss anymore.

This is my repository with exercises that I use for the trainings: github.com/jeffreygroneberg/gh

Vibe coding tip:
Use comments to mark core business logic you don't want AI to touch.
Not bulletproof, but it helps real developers spot critical parts.
