I've had a couple of chances over the years to interview Rich and his colleagues, and tour their labs. Their work on reinforcement learning - far more interesting than LLM - has made Edmonton a real AI centre of excellence. Terence TaoCongratulations to Avi Wigderson for receiving the 2023 <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/TuringAward" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#TuringAward</a>! <a href="https://www.ias.edu/news/avi-wigderson-2023-acm-am-turing-award" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no">https://www.ias.edu/news/avi-wigderson-2023-acm-am-turing-award</a> Avi has made many deep contributions to complexity theory, in no small part by linking it to a staggeringly large number of fields of mathematics (probability, combinatorics, algebraic geometry, linear algebra, operator algebras, etc. ...), and also has a knack of giving extremely accessible lectures (with the slides in his trademark Comic Sans font, which has become almost synonymous with complexity theory presentations in some circles).As it turns out, Avi gave a talk here in Cambridge, UK (at a conference honoring Timothy Gowers) shortly after the news broke, which gave the chair (Ben Green) a nice opportunity to announce the prize.
