Bobbing BoatAt some points along the UK's canals, the banks are reinforced by using wood piling.The wood rots, and the ground meant to stay behind it flushes into the canal. At that point there's water on both sides of the rotting wood piling. This makes it unsuitable for boats to tie up.Wooden banks probably have some benefits, but I'm unaware of them. Bobbing BoatThings have progressed rapidly this week. Bobbing BoatThis is what it looks like along the bank. On the land side of the piling, they'll fill the crushed rock you can see piled in the distance, then topped by soil, which is piled high on the car park to the left, just outside the photo.From now on, trips to the toilet block will involve plodding through mud. Thanks, guys. 🤬Incidentally, I have no idea what was wrong with the soft bank. Bobbing BoatA Canal & River Trust crew just unloaded a truckful of galvanized-steel trench sheeting, also known as piling or campshedding.These interlocking sheets will be driven vertically into the ground, to form a hard bank—or edge—along the canal.
