I got interested in this because of a heated discussion between OSS devs about 20 years ago, and it has kept popping up since.The most eye opening experiences were with groups of children. Martin ModrákPains in fitting a discrete mixture of models (in the simple case equivalent to Bayesian Model Averaging) in Stan are discussed. The claim is that a custom Gibbs sampler works better.
