Within a certain amount, is a useful method of dividing the commons, trading goods and services and allowing people control over their lives and choices. Its something you earned.<br>After a certain amount it stops being something about what you earned and much more about power. That power now has the power over other people instead of just power over oneself. This allows you to change the rules of the game, put pressure on desperate people to sell their labor for less, and ensure the laws don't apply to you. Up to a certain point like an analogy its very useful and beneficial, after a certain limit it starts to break down and becomes at best useless and at worst dangerous.<br>Its why <a href="https://friendica.myportal.social/search?tag=Proudhon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Proudhon</span></a> called for money to be replaced with single use labor credits, that couldn't be used to create more money off of others.<br><a href="https://friendica.myportal.social/search?tag=socialconstruct" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>socialconstruct</span></a> <a href="https://friendica.myportal.social/search?tag=capitalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>capitalism</span></a>
Androcat<p>The funny thing about social constructs is that they bring two distinct meanings of the (extremely problematic) term "objective" into direct conflict.</p><p>Specifically, the meaning of 'objective' that is "existing intrinsically, plainly detectable, clearly segmentable from its immediate environs, etc. etc." and the meaning of 'objective' that is "agreed upon by all members of a group, etc. etc."</p><p>What makes a social construct a construct is that it has no physical particulars, is not plainly detectable, cannot be clearly segmented away from its immediate environs (if it can even be said to have immediate environs), i.e. it is not an 'objectively existing entity', and in fact it's entire existence consists of the 'objective' agreement or objectively held belief that it exists.</p><p>So, that's what humans are like, if you were wondering why things are shit.</p><p>Humans are all about those 'objectively' non-existing 'objective' existences.</p><p>Ugh.</p><p>p.s. in case you were wondering, both those senses of 'objective' are pretty much bollocks.</p><p><a href="https://toot.cat/tags/objective" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>objective</span></a> <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/socialConstruct" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>socialConstruct</span></a> <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/borders" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>borders</span></a> <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/nation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nation</span></a> <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/Institution" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Institution</span></a> <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/law" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>law</span></a> <a href="https://toot.cat/tags/philosophy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>philosophy</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://a.gup.pe/u/philosophy" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>philosophy</span></a></span></p>
That Frisian Girl-ish<p><span>I feel there's something to think about, and maybe I'll go into more detail when I have.<br><br>A social construct is an arbitrary, cultural, and zeitgeisty implicit social accord, usually to serve a function in society.<br>The underlying social construct about gender is not what is manly or womanly, or the number of genders. It is that we assign societal roles based on an identity assigned on genital appearance at birth at all. And if we are to change anything about the social construct around gender, we have to subject it to scrutiny with regard to its function in the current world.<br><br>What is the use, what is the verdict when the doctor in the delivery room proclaims "It's a boy!" or "It's a girl!" and jots that down on an official piece of paper? That Frisian Girl-ish<p><span>"… is a </span><a href="https://blahaj.zone/tags/SocialConstruct" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#SocialConstruct</a><span>" does not mean it doesn't exist, is unreal, or has no impact. Social constructs are powerful entities for a social species, as they are widely shared ideas, and often represent basic functions. That being said, they are also somewhat arbitrary and can be changed.<br><br>Money as a social construct, for example, is the abstract idea of value being exchangeable between individuals. It is important, although capitalism somewhat perverted it with the idea that money alone should make more money, and absurdly on top by the mathematical unstable, exponential interest function - as you see, under capitalism, the social construct of money has changed, and we can change it again.<br><br>Gender as another social construct can change, too. The binary gender model has 2 genders, specific biological and physiological properties, traits, interests, social roles, prescriptions on normative behaviour. All this is pretty arbitrarily thrown together, and this social construct in a more egalitarian society loses more and more of its social function, as it is inherently hierarchical; the concept of women being inferior can only work if what is defined as the role of women in a society is valued less, their contributions are made invisible, and their assigned virtues make them dependent.<br><br>This is, paradoxically, why successful feminism actually dissolves binary gender and does away with "woman" as a meaningful social trait - it merely becomes a private conviction. Undoing what a woman is socially frees women to be what they can be and want to be.</span></p>
Cees Grootes<p>Researchers say time is an illusion.</p><p>Time we're experiencing is a social construct. Real time is actually something quite different. In some of the odder corners of the Universe, space and time can stretch and slow — and sometimes even break down completely.</p><p>🔗 <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/12/16/1139780043/what-is-time-physics-atomic-clocks-society" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">npr.org/2022/12/16/1139780043/</span><span class="invisible">what-is-time-physics-atomic-clocks-society</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/time" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>time</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/illusion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>illusion</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/SocialConstruct" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SocialConstruct</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/psychology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>psychology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/sociology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sociology</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/relativity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>relativity</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/TimeManagement" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TimeManagement</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/gravity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gravity</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/universe" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>universe</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/astronomy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>astronomy</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/astrophysical" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>astrophysical</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/clock" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>clock</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/clocks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>clocks</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/StandardTime" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>StandardTime</span></a></p>
