emeritrix<p>Budget Cuts, Portland Police and the Labor Movement </p><p>A discussion with Portland's union rank-and-file.</p><p>Kristian Williams, author of "Our Enemies in Blue: Police and Power in America" and forthcoming "Policing the Progressive City" about Portland, leads the discussion. </p><p>The cops are worried about Portland City Council. They've gotten used to bloated police budgets, absurd overtime payouts, and immunity for violent misconduct. But with four socialists elected to City Council, the police union is suddenly trying to brand itself as a "friend of workers" -- petitioning to join the regional council of labor unions, the Northwest Oregon Labor Council (NOLC). The labor council "speaks" for labor at City Council meetings and with elected politicians. What does this mean for Portlanders fighting for a city budget that doesn't cut their community centers, parks, and services? emeritrix<p>I don't always agree with Sherry Wolf (or with anyone always, of course) but the comments below seem to me about right. In Portland, there were, by at least one count, 50,000 (so, proportionately a better turnout than NYC). Many were masked, and I appreciate all those protecting everyone's health in the crowd.</p><p>Important to remember also that in discussing 'nonviolent' protests, the violence generally comes from the police, so the peacefulness, some have suggested, comes from police having underestimated turnout (and thus being unprepared for encountering the crowd) or indifference to the actions of old white people likely to go home after the march. <br>I've heard that there are nationwide calls for further marches April 19 & May 1, but have not seen anything definite for PDX. There is, however, an upcoming meeting April 12 dedicated to building long-term alliances--not just mobilizing people to protest but organizing to gain positive changes. John Eckman<p><strong>Bill Evans, Live at the Village Vanguard, 1967 on Riverside</strong></p><p>This is actually a reissue of what originally came out in 1961 (also on Riverside) as <em>Sunday at the Village Vanguard</em>, credited to the Bill Evans Trio “featuring Scott La Faro.” La Faro died in a car accident less than two weeks after the gig was recorded. Evans on piano, La Faro on bass, and Paul Motian on drums. Produced by Orrin Keepnews.</p><p>Not sure why Riverside reissued this credited to just Bill Evans, but happy to find a pressing from the 60s in great shape. John Eckman<p><strong>Neil Young, Neil Young, 1969 on Reprise</strong></p><p>Young’s debut solo album. It can be tricky to keep all the chronology straight here, as someone who came to Young much later in his career – but this is following his departure from Buffalo Springfield and before the first Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young record. <em>Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere</em> (with Crazy Horse) was the followup. </p><p>Great songs here: The Loner, The Old Laughing Lady, and I’ve Loved Her So Long. The tracks produced by Jack Nitzsche and Ry Cooder, the rest David Biggs. It sometimes gets credited as having been released in 1968 (wikipedia for example) but I believe it actually came out in January of 1969. (See <a href="https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1299&dat=19690206&id=xscpAAAAIBAJ&sjid=9IsDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6132,1163188" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">this Village Voice ad</a> citing Jan 22nd, 1969). </p><p>My copy is a 1970 US Pressing, with Neil’s name in black on the cover (first pressings left the name off) and “Stereo” at the bottom of the labels. John Eckman<p><strong>Peter Buck, Warzone Earth, 2015 on Mississippi Records</strong></p><p>This is the third solo album from the former R.E.M. guitarist, all on Portland OR’s <a href="https://www.mississippirecords.net/catalog/mississippi-records" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Mississippi Records</a>. Frequent Buck collaborators present here include Scott McCaughey, Kurt Bloch, and William Rieflin.
