chimiseanga<p>Piecewise circular isometries</p><p>After attending Bob Hearn&#39;s JMM talk on symmetries of intersecting circles, I just had to generate my own art. I used the ideas from this paper: <a href="https://vrs.amsi.org.au/wp-content/uploads/sites/92/2020/01/gossow_martin_vrs-report.pdf" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">vrs.amsi.org.au/wp-content/upl</span><span class="invisible">oads/sites/92/2020/01/gossow_martin_vrs-report.pdf</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/genart" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>genart</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/fractal" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>fractal</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/jmm2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>jmm2024</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/circles" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>circles</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/fractals" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>fractals</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/math" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>math</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/mathematics" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>mathematics</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/python" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>python</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/py5" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>py5</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/processing" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>processing</span></a></p>
Dan Bach - @dansmath<p>Whew recovering after the <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/JMM2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>JMM2024</span></a> (Joint Mathematics Meetings) but it was fun having them in SF just across the Bay. Here’s my artwork and a pic from my talk!</p>
EMS Press<p>Some impressions from our booth at <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/jmm2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>jmm2024</span></a> in San Francisco. It was great to see so many mathematicians coming by and speaking to Apostolos Damialis (Editorial Director) about our books programme and <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/subscribe2open" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>subscribe2open</span></a>. <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/openaccess" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>openaccess</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/s2o" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>s2o</span></a> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/@EuroMathSoc" class="u-url mention">@<span>EuroMathSoc</span></a></span></p>

R. Seppo<p>Has Mathstodon heard about the protest that happened at the <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/JMM2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>JMM2024</span></a> career fair? A bunch of mathematicians took a stand against NSA recruitment. Here are some photos the Just Mathematics Collective posted to Twitter, including the &quot;demonstration area&quot; the AMS so graciously provided.</p><p><a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/MathMinusMilitarism" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>MathMinusMilitarism</span></a></p>

davidlowryduda<p>Another notable question from a textbook publishing panel at the <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/JMM2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>JMM2024</span></a> - how do you read (a textbook, a paper, other informational materials)?</p><p>A major part of academia is learning how to read. This is very personal! But it also says things about how you write.</p>
davidlowryduda<p>At <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/JMM2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>JMM2024</span></a>, at a panel on textbooks in the future, it was casually noted that there hasn&#39;t been much (almost any?) research on best practices in research textbook authoring.</p><p>And for that matter, there is only some in undergraduate book authoring.</p>
Charlotte Aten<p>I&#39;m giving a short advertisement for my work on <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/NeuralNets" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>NeuralNets</span></a> at <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/JMM2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>JMM2024</span></a> in about 15 minutes! I applied a bit late and ended up in one of the contributed paper sessions. These are already a bit more subdued, but this one is particularly poorly attended. Perhaps it&#39;s for the best, since the videos on my YouTube channel (link in bio) are much more detailed than what I&#39;m about to say.</p>

Charlotte Aten<p>This year&#39;s Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Francisco is going to be pretty chill for me. This is my fourth <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/JMM" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>JMM</span></a> and my third in person. Last year I organized a session on <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/AppliedCategoryTheory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>AppliedCategoryTheory</span></a>, but this time around I&#39;m just giving a couple talks on <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/MachineLearning" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>MachineLearning</span></a> and the history of the <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/Bourbaki" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Bourbaki</span></a> group.</p><p><a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/JMM2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>JMM2024</span></a></p>
R. Sunder-Raj<p>According to my tracking information, my print has made it to the warehouse for <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/JMM2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>JMM2024</span></a> in time!</p><p>It may eventually end up in a Gathering 4 Gardner auction at some point in the future (my pieces from <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/JMM2023" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>JMM2023</span></a> are going to be in the February G4G auction).</p>
Charlotte Aten<p>It looks like I&#39;m going to be giving at least one talk at <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/JMM2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>JMM2024</span></a> in San Francisco. The organizers of the Special Session in History of Math have gotten back to me (very quickly!) about my talk on the <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/Bourbaki" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Bourbaki</span></a> group&#39;s theory of mathematical structures and its legacy. I will of course discuss <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/CategoryTheory" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>CategoryTheory</span></a> and will also mention combinatorial species and algebraic theories, among other topics.</p><p>You can find some previous contact I&#39;ve had with the history of mathematics at the links below.</p><p><a href="https://hsm.stackexchange.com/questions/13301/why-did-%c3%98ystein-ores-lattice-based-approach-disappear" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">hsm.stackexchange.com/question</span><span class="invisible">s/13301/why-did-%c3%98ystein-ores-lattice-based-approach-disappear</span></a></p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lp1wh9ZxcmE" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=lp1wh9Zxcm</span><span class="invisible">E</span></a></p><p><a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/history" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>history</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/math" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>math</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/algebra" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>algebra</span></a> <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/topology" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>topology</span></a></p>
Charlotte Aten<p>This past January I hosted a special session on applied category theory at the Joint Math Meetings in Boston. I accidentally gave a talk in that session even though I didn&#39;t plan on it. I am now submitting all of my abstracts for <a href="https://mathstodon.xyz/tags/JMM2024" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>JMM2024</span></a> during the two hours before the deadline. I guess I can&#39;t help living dangerously.
