oatmeal
Quoting Hanin Majadli: Eva Illouz was a mouthpiece for right-wing propaganda, and in response received a slap

Majadli discusses how Israel's Education Minister Yoav Kish disqualified Professor Eva Illouz from receiving the Israel Prize due to what he called her "anti-Israeli ideology." The reason cited was her 2021 participation in a petition to the International Criminal Court in The Hague requesting an investigation into whether Israel committed war crimes in the West Bank.

In response to this disqualification, Illouz stated to Haaretz: "During the last 18 months, I dedicated my energy to writing for the international press with the aspiration to defend Israel. In the most prestigious newspapers in Spain, France, and Germany, I never stopped clarifying that Hamas is a terrorist organization, that Israel had the right to respond to a ground invasion of its territory, that anti-Zionism is an expression of antisemitism, and that the accusations of genocide against it are nothing but a continuation of antisemitic discourse."

Majadli criticizes Illouz for having been a "loyal mouthpiece for the most right-wing Israeli propaganda" for a year and a half, only to be rejected by the state she defended. Majadli argues that there is little difference between Illouz's response to the war and that of any standard Zionist leftist in Israel.

She says that Illouz and other Zionist intellectuals who identify as leftists were focusing on "deciphering esoteric shades of antisemitism in the global left" while diverting attention from the violence being carried out in Gaza. She suggests that Illouz could have gained more respect by refusing any prize from a state that killed tens of thousands civilians in Gaza.

Majadli wonders when will the academic community understand that the "Israel Prize" is not a badge of honor but a mark of disgrace, and characterizes Illouz as symbolizing "the ongoing failure of the Zionist left to understand the State of Israel as it truly is, and not as they would like it to be."

Hebrew https://www.haaretz.co.il/opinions/2025-03-27/ty-article-opinion/.premium/00000195-d323-da7e-adb7-fbbbef440000 or https://archive.is/QDjkq

Hanin Majadli is a Palestinian Israeli journalist, publicist, and editor at #Haaretz.

@palestine
@israel
@academicchatter
#GazaGenocide
#Zionism #EvaIllouz
#antisemitism #WeaponizedAntisemitism

oatmeal
Quoting Meron Rapoport on why Israel's plan for Gaza has one fitting description: a concentration camp

Meron Rapoport details how Israel intends to relocate Gaza's 2.2 million residents into a confined, enclosed area, with those remaining outside facing death. This strategy emerges as officials recognize "voluntary evacuation" isn't feasible. The plan involves creating controlled zones where Palestinians would be contained indefinitely, potentially pushing them toward eventual emigration as they face a destroyed homeland with no future.

[…] On the same day, Defense Minister Israel Katz published a recorded announcement with the following statement: "Residents of Gaza, this is a final warning. The first Sinwar destroyed Gaza, and the second Sinwar will completely demolish it. The Air Force attack against Hamas terrorists was just the first step. What follows will be much harder, and you will pay the full price. Soon, the evacuation of the population from combat zones will begin again. If all Israeli hostages are not released and Hamas is not removed from Gaza - Israel will act with forces you have never experienced before. Take the advice of the US President. Return the hostages and remove Hamas, and other options will open for you - including departure to other places in the world for those who wish. The alternative is complete destruction and devastation."

[…] Instead of using many words, we can describe in just two words this compound where the military intends to concentrate Gaza's residents, after forcing them from their current locations through threats and bombings: concentration camp. This is the most precise definition, the most accurate, that best helps us understand where we stand.

[…] In the government and military, they may think that "voluntary evacuation" of Gaza's population will erase the crimes #Israel has committed so far, once Gazans find a better future elsewhere. The sad truth is that while such a forced migration operation has no practical feasibility, the ways in which Israel might try to implement it could lead to much more serious crimes - concentration in camps, systematic destruction of the entire area, and perhaps even actual extermination.

Hebrew https://www.mekomit.co.il/%D7%9C%D7%AA%D7%95%D7%9B%D7%A0%D7%99%D7%AA-%D7%A9%D7%9C-%D7%99%D7%A9%D7%A8%D7%90%D7%9C-%D7%9C%D7%A2%D7%96%D7%94-%D7%99%D7%A9-%D7%AA%D7%99%D7%90%D7%95%D7%A8-%D7%94%D7%95%D7%9C%D7%9D-%D7%90%D7%97%D7%93/

Rapoport is an Israeli journalist and former News Department head at #Haaretz.

The threat to concentrate an entire civilian population into a restricted area, declaring those outside it as potential targets, and the explicit threats of "complete destruction" for non-compliance with military demands, all potentially violate fundamental principles of distinction, proportionality, and protection of civilians during armed conflict. While the military initially claimed the strike targeted "terrorists in Hamas terror infrastructure in an area previously used as a hospital," Haaretz reports that military leadership was surprised by the decision to demolish the structure.

This latest incident adds to Vach's record of controversial actions in Gaza, including:

- Implementing relaxed rules of engagement in the Netzarim Corridor resulting in Palestinians being shot for crossing arbitrary lines, including children and elderly

- Conducting operations that allegedly endangered his own troops, resulting in the deaths of eight reserve soldiers in just days

- Previous accusations of blocking humanitarian aid

- Ordering arbitrary killings of Palestinians

The Military Advocate General has instructed Southern Command Commander Major General Yaniv Asur to investigate the circumstances of the incident.

Hebrew https://www.haaretz.co.il/news/politics/2025-03-24/ty-article/.premium/00000195-c7b7-de89-a1fd-e7b769e70000 or https://archive.is/pvtIs

English https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/2025-03-24/ty-article/.premium/idf-investigating-if-commander-demolished-nonfunctioning-hospital-in-gaza-without-approval/00000195-c820-d2d1-a397-ea2d0c900000 or https://archive.is/lxze2

Background

Vach is an Israeli military officer born in 1979 in Kiryat Arba, a settlement in the West Bank. War crimes and potential crimes against humanity for ordering his soldiers to shoot on sight any Palestinians approaching the Netzarim Corridor. The article states the Israeli military estimates over 200 Palestinians were killed this way, with fewer than 10 being Hamas members.

2. Preventing humanitarian aid from entering Gaza, with reports that he made blocking aid a central aspect of his policy. The article mentions that an aid convoy was even bombed in his area of control.

3. Endangering his own soldiers by ordering assaults in insufficiently prepared areas.

4.
