👩‍🦯The Blind FraggleToday was a fandomy day all around! Today Mom and I went to the Fraggle Rock Back to the Rock live show in Tampa. It was a lot of fun! Every time I go to something like that I feel like I'm at an unofficial fan convention, lol. Then when we got home one of my Wandering Inn shirts came! I love it! My mom was kind enough to get them for me. A keychain as well for my backpack. Different ThanI often say I'm "bad at hobbies/fandoms", but that's shorthand for my actual pattern:<ol><li>Get excited about something</li><li>Learn a bunch of stuff about it, including some of the technical details, history, or esoterica...</li><li>...enough to make some people think I must have obsessive knowledge & experience; even some people in that world will think this until we talk for 2 minutes</li><li>For the next 1-20 years surf the edges of the thing, diving in a little or a lot when random interest grabs me or I see a reference in social media or IRL</li></ol>It's pretty much a "jack of all trades" kind of thing. This leads to groups that welcome refugees of all kinds. All to the good.Then the idea becomes part of the group's identity. Instead of understanding that people in the group tend to be more tolerant than others because of their experiences, they start assuming that being part of the group automatically *makes* them less prejudiced."We can't be racist / sexist / etc., that's a mundane problem!" So when these "mundane" <a href="https://qoto.org/tags/bigotries" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#bigotries</a> turn up in the subculture, as they *inevitably* do, they get swept under the rug.Yeah, well, you can be, and very often you are. Face it. Deal with it. Be better than the people who made your life hell. Or at the very least, stop acting so hurt and surprised when you get called on your own brand of bullshit.
